The Constitution of the Washington and Jefferson College Student Athletic Advisory Committee

Preamble

Approximately 50% of the student body at Washington and Jefferson College play a varsity sport.  We have a vast presence around our campus.  We represent our school at home games, at road games, and throughout the Presidents Athletic Conference (PAC) and the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).  It is very important that those chosen to lead their teams on this committee do so with the highest amount of respect, class, and sportsmanship.  We must all agree to be committed to this committee and pledge our intelligence, skills, and talents to help better the Athletic Department and the experience of athletics at Washington and Jefferson College.

Article I (Membership)

Section 1

·         Membership to the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) will consist of 1 or 2 representatives from each of the 23 NCAA sanctioned teams.  You must be an active member of this team to take part in this committee.  These representatives should be from different grade levels at the college.  Coaches may appoint their representatives, or each team can hold a private election for their representatives.  The representatives are elected for a term of one year.

Section 2

·         Members will serve as a liaison between the committee and his or her individual team, and express any ideas or concerns of teammates to the committee.

Section 3

·         Members are responsible for attending all meetings of the SAAC.  If they are unable to attend, they are responsible for finding an alternate from their respective team to take their place at the meeting.

Article II (Purpose)

Section 1

·         Each member of SAAC is expected to promote communication between student- athletes and the Athletic Department and the college.

Section 2

·         One of the goals of any team in any sport is to produce a quality product for people in hopes that they will attend their games.  SAAC seeks to encourage unity, support, and bring camaraderie between teams and among all varsity athletes.

Section 3

·         We want to design and implement programs which will encourage academic achievement, health, fitness, and social responsibility.

Section 4

·         As an important voice in the athletic department, it will be the job of the committee to solicit student-athlete response to proposed PAC and NCAA legislation.

Article III (Officers and Duties)

Section 1 (The President)

·         The President presides creates the agenda, with appropriate input from the representatives and other officers, along with Advisor.  He or she serves as a liaison to the Athletic Director and members of the Athletic Department and can call meetings as needed, in consensus with other officers.  The length of the term of the President is one year.

·         If the President is dismissed, the Vice- President assumes all authority of the office of the President and can appoint a new vice- president from the other officers, or from the representatives.

·         The President also has the power to appoint a new Vice- President, Secretary and Treasurer if those seats a vacated for any reason.  Although the President does not need the approval of the committee to make an appointment, it is in his or hers best interest to seek the guidance of the other officers and representatives in the committee when appointing a new officer.  This is called “unofficial approval.”

Section 2 (The Vice- President)

·         The Vice- President presides over meetings when the President is absent and plays a role in setting the agenda.  The length of the term of the Vice- President is one year.

·         If the President is absent for three weeks, or longer, or is spending time in a study abroad program, the Vice- President will serve as the acting- President and possesses all rights and privileges of the office.

·         If the Vice- President is dismissed, the Secretary assumes all authority of the office of the Vice- President.

Section 3 (The Secretary)

·         If the President and Vice- President are absent for 3 weeks, or longer, or are spending time in a study abroad program, the Secretary will serve as the acting- President and possesses all rights and privileges of the office.

·         If the Secretary is dismissed, the President can appoint any member of the committee to that position.

Section 4 (The Treasurer)

·         The Treasurer handles all disbursements of cash and collects receipts for all expenditures and reports the balance of treasury at each meeting.  The length of the term of the Treasurer is one year.

·         If the President, Vice- President, and Secretary are absent for 3 weeks, or longer, or are spending time in a study abroad program, the Treasurer will serve as the acting- President and possesses all rights and privileges of the office.

Section 3

·         When voting for Officers, every team has 1 vote.  The Advisor does not have a vote.  The recipient of the most votes for each office in question is declared the winner.  In the case of where an election is decided by a difference of 2 votes or less, one recount may take place.  After the final tally of the recount, if the outcome is the same, the election is closed and the recipient of the most votes is declared the winner.  If final tally of the recount has different outcome than the original tally, then a second recount will take place.  After the final tally of the second recount, the recipient of the most votes will be declared the winner.
