W&J RALLIES TWICE TO SWEEP DENISON (4/5)

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Back-to-back late inning rallies helped the Washington & Jefferson College softball team sweep a non-conference doubleheader from Denison University on Sunday afternoon at Brooks Park.  W&J (9-13) claimed game one by an 8-7 margin and then completed the sweep with a 5-3 win in the second game.  Junior left-handed pitcher Georgia Schumacher (Pennsboro, W.Va./Ritchie County) earned both wins on the mound for W&J.  The Big Red (12-11) jumped all over the Presidents with four runs in the first inning of game one, but W&J answered with three runs in the bottom half of the frame.  Senior first baseman Valerie Schultz (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) doubled home the first run and sophomore designated player Kristine Barry (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) followed with a run-scoring groundout.  Schultz scored the third run following an error.  The game was tied, 5-5, after three innings, but Denison plated two runs in the fourth on junior catcher Brie Berkopec’s (Mars, Pa./Mars) two-run double.   Senior shortstop Kelly Morrow (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) brought the Presidents to within 7-6 in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly.  Washington & Jefferson grabbed its first lead in the bottom of the sixth as Morrow doubled in a pair of runs.  Schumacher recorded the final three outs in the seventh to notch the win in relief. Morrow was 2-for-3 with three RBIs in game one, while senior pitcher Rebecca Nachreiner (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) hit a two-run homer.  Nachreiner worked the first three innings before Schumacher allowed two runs on seven hits in the final four frames.  Freshman second baseman Lauren Lynn (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) went 4-for-4 to lead Denison.  Junior Sam Rumschlag (Carmel, Ind./Cathedral) suffered the loss after giving up eight runs (five earned) on seven hits.  Lynn’s two-run homer gave Denison a 2-0 lead after the first inning of game two.  W&J sophomore leftfielder Victoria Doerschner (Pittsburgh, Pa./Carrick) singled and scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to cut the lead in half.  W&J completed the comeback with a four-run top of the seventh inning.  Junior centerfielder Sarah Jolley (Fayette City, Pa./Belle Vernon) led off with a single and tied the game after scoring on a wild pitch.  Sophomore second baseman Katelynn Falleroni’s (Washington, Pa./Trinity) {above}  followed with a three-run homer to put the Presidents in front. Denison scored one run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate with two outs, but Schumacher fielded a ground ball and fired to Schultz at first base to seal the win. Schumacher threw all seven innings and allowed 13 hits.  She walked one batter and struck out two.  Falleroni was 3-for-4 at the plate in the second contest with three runs batted in.
