Hellbender (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis)

Hellbenders are found in clear fast-flowing streams and rivers with rocky bottoms. They prefer hiding under these large flat river rocks, feeding on crayfish, snails, and worms. Their survival has been threatened lately due to dam construction and pollution. They are currently found from southwest New York to northern Alabama and Georgia and separate populations are found in Missouri and the Susquehanna River (New York and Pennsylvania). This species has not been found in Chartiers Creek but it is located nearby in Buffalo Creek.
