Jefferson Salamander

Ambystoma jeffersonianum

 

 

The Jefferson Salamander was named for Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. The Blue-spotted Salamander is a similar species which Jefferson Salamanders have been known to hybridize with in the northeastern United States and southern Canada (west to northern Wisconsin and south to Indiana and Ohio).

Identification: long toes; log snout, slender build; belly paler than sides; small bluish flecks mostly on limbs and lower sides of the body

Range: from southern New York to West Virginia, central Kentucky, and southern Indiana

Breeding: early spring
