Identification: red spots variable in number and position; aquatic adults olive-green to

yellow or dark greenish brown; yellow belly; male has high tail fin

land form called a Red Eft

Range: Canadian Maritime provinces to Great Lakes and south to central Georgia and

Alabama

Breeding: spring; male develops black horny growths on hind legs and toes

Habitat: ponds, small lakes, unpolluted water; remain active even in winter
