The Family Osmeridae, represented by the Rainbow Smelt, Osmerus mordax, are among the most valuable commercial fishes on the easwt coast. They have a range from the Great Lakes into the Mississippi River Valley, inhabiting inland lakes and streams, along with coastal areas. The Rainbow Smelt can be found in both freshwater and anadromous populations.
