The largemouth blackbass (Micropterus salmoides) occurs in non-flowering waters such as ponds, lakes, pools, and sometimes in slow moving streams with aquatic vegetation. It prefers bottoms ranging from sand, to hard clay, to soft muck, and to organic debris.

The largemouth bass can be found in southern Canada throughout the entire Great Lakes system and Mississippi Valley to northeastern Mexico and extreme western Florida. It also can be found north along the Coastal Plain to North Carolina and possibly farther from western Florida to southwestern South Carolina.
