Blanding's Turtle
Size: Averages a carapace length of around 15 cm and can grow up to around 25 cm.
Appearance: "semi-box turtle" has a hinged plastron but cant completely withdraw its appendages into its shell; elongated smooth carapace, not keeled or serrate, each scute usually contains a centrally located spot; bright yellow chin and throat can bee seen from a distance.
Range: Nova Scotia to Nebraska, discontinuous, in Pennsylvania can be found near Erie and also around Pymatuning Reservoir.
Habitat: Marshes, bogs lakes, small streams where vegetation is abundant; mostly aquatic and prefers soft, but firm organic bottoms.
Habits: Basks and floats; diurnal and most active in the morning from April through September; may hiss when picked up.
