Bog Turtle or "Muhlenberg's Turtle"
Size: Small, carapace length averaging 8-9 cm and can reach 12 cm.
Appearance: Head patch yellow or split into two parts; large carapace scutes are usually some shade of brown and have yellowish or reddish centers, carapace is an elongated moderate dome with a low keel; ventral skin is blotched with red or orange.
Range: Rare, New York to North Carolina from sea level to 4000+ feet of elevation in disjunct colonies; resides near Erie and in Pymatuning Reservoir areas.
Habitat: Spaghnum bogs, swamps, and clear streams with soft bottoms; disappearance due to drainage of wetlands.
Habits: Mostly diurnal, most active in the late morning in the spring; hibernates early November to late March; seeks shelter when very hot.
