The Eastern Cottonmouth has 130 to 144 ventral scales, and 37 to 53 caudal scales. When the Eastern Cottonmouth is alarmed, it draws its head back and snaps its mouth open, showing its surprisingly white interior. It is a water snake, yet unlike water snakes it often vibrates its tail rapidly.
