Virginia valeriae

Eastern Smooth Earth Snake

 

This species of Earth snake has a divided anal plate and a reddish brown to gray body. There are fifteen rows of scales and really no distinguishing characteristics except for widely scattered dark spots on the body. The belly is grayish, off-white, or yellowish. Maximum body length is seven to ten inches long. There is a loreal scale that is horizontal and touching the eye (Figure 3).
