Chartiers Creek begins in Washington County, south of Pittsburgh and flows north entering the Ohio River just west of the City of Pittsburgh. Its upper reaches flow through agricultural lands and unsewered suburbs of Washington Pa. Upon entering Washington Pa, the stream is influenced by the usual industrial pollution, treated sewage and the usual city effects. North of Washington, the stream passes through suburbs of Pittsburgh, PA and scattered industries. Acid Mine Drainage first becomes a major problem around Canonsburg Pa, which is located between Washington and Pittsburgh The lower portion, as one approaches Pittsburgh, is lined with woodland and one has to look and listen carefully to realize that a city and its industry is close by.
