W&J Presidents Head to Texas for NCAA Quarterfinals
The road to the Stagg Bowl runs through Texas! The W&J football team travels to Belton, Texas on Saturday, December 6 for the quarterfinals of the NCAA playoffs where they will meet the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders. Jim Elliott ’68 will serve as alumni host for the game, providing Presidents' fans with W&J accessories to help our alumni and parents cheer the team onto victory. If you're there, look for Jim in the visitors' section! If you can't make it to Texas, you can check out live stats or the NCAA Division III tournament bracket. You can also listen on game day, by tuning into WJPA's streaming audio broadcast. GO PRESIDENTS!
Jay Connected Features Photo Galleries from Fall '08 Events
This fall, W&J's Alumni Office traveled from Ohio to Washington state to California! Closer to home, we hosted a cultural event in downtown Pittsburgh and two tailgates at Cameron Stadium's Towler Hall. After each event, we post the photos online in the Photo Gallery of Jay Connected, your alumni Web site. To view photos from an event you attended, or to see what you missed, click on the icon of the folder of the event. You can enlarge the thumbnail photos by double clicking on the individual image. Also, feel free to add your own comment in the provided comment boxes. The photo gallery is a great opportunity to see the varied events hosted throughout the country. Stay tuned for upcoming winter and spring photo albums too!
W&J's Science Initiative Expanding Its Scope
With the groundbreaking for the John A. Swanson Science Center on September 12 and construction well underway, we are proud to announce that the W&J Science
Initiative is embarking on a new, public phase. Our Web site provides frequent updates on the construction of the Science Center, and the webcam allows visitors to watch live updates as workers lay the foundation for this significant addition to our beautiful campus. The John A. Swanson Science Center is slated for completion in 2010. Additional components of the W&J Science Initiative include substantial renovations to Dieter-Porter Hall and increased endowment funding for the sciences.
We are reaching out to our greatest strength, our alumni, to help us reach our funding goal for the initial component of the Initiative, the Swanson Science Center. The Kresge Foundation has generously issued a Challenge Grant to help us finalize funding for the Science Center. Your support at this time will help us meet the challenge set by Kresge. We hope you will take advantage of this historic opportunity and join with us to ensure that W&J continues its long tradition of being a leader in science education, regionally and nationally. To learn more or to become a part of this initiative, please contact Karen Crenshaw, Director of Development and Planned Giving, at (724) 223-6502 or kcrenshaw@RemoveThisPart.washjeff.edu.
Making Lasting Connections: The Office of Alumni Relations Plans for Student/Alumni Initiatives
Students and alumni have a lot to teach each other! To make these relationships possible, the Office of Alumni Relations, Alumni Executive Council, and a newly formed Student Advisory Group are exploring ways to bring alumni and students together. Whether it be volunteering alongside a student group in the Washington Community or networking with student leaders at a special reception, alumni can re-connect with what W&J is today by getting to know our amazing students. In turn, building relationships with alumni helps students develop valuable life skills. Keep an eye out for future communications and calls for volunteers to help with these student/alumni initiatives. We know the students are excited about these opportunities and are hopeful that alumni respond and become involved in these meaningful interactions!
Family Weekend a Success!
On the weekend of November 7-9, families of current students descended upon W&J’s campus to spend time with their children and celebrate Family Weekend. In addition to the many athletic events and family-friendly campus activities, a legacy reception was hosted by the Office of Alumni Relations at the President’s House for all alumni parents and their W&J students. Eleven alumni and their families were greeted by President Haring-Smith and were able to share their memories of their days at Jay with their children. While we know of several families with many generations of W&J alumni (60 current students can claim at least one parent as a graduate), our records are not as complete as we’d like. If you would like to share your stories of W&J legacy or report on your “W&J Family Tree”, please go to the Jay Connected Discussion Board and tell us more! Photos of the legacy reception can be viewed here.
Faculty Spotlight Shines on Buba Misawa
W&J Political Science Professor Buba Misawa is all too aware of the poverty in West Africa. Twice a year, he guides students to Gambia and Senegal to experience life on the other side of the world. This upcoming January, he will conduct a semester-long course for eight W&J students in West Africa. The experience is far more than merely learning about diverse cultures. "Students learn about themselves," Misawa says. "They realize that they fight with their parents over nothing when they have everything."
In addition to the student trips and his college teaching duties, Misawa has teamed with David White '77, who met Misawa while serving on the College's Board of Trustees. White owns Universal Hotel Liquidators in Connecticut, which sells used hotel furniture, bedding and other discarded, but still useable, items. After visiting Africa with Misawa twice in 2007 and 2008, White has donated dozens of desks from New York City hotels, and 14 ice machines to Gambia so people can make ice to store their daily catches of fish. He's currently in negotiations to send beds from the Westin Hotel in Pittsburgh to Gambia. "It's really touched my life," White said. "We go over there with these 20- and 21-year-old students, and it affects their lives, too. It's a life-changing experience." Misawa and White hope to expand their unnamed charity, which is setting up a furniture outlet store in Gambia, to solicit donations from other sources. Their endeavors were recently featured in both the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and the Washington Observer-Reporter. (L-R, Dr. Buba Misawa and David White '77.)
Vote Online Now for W&J Quarterback Bobby Swallow!
In lieu of a monthly poll question, we thought we'd provide the chance for our alumni to vote for W&J QB Bobby Swallow in a NCAA Division III football poll. Washington & Jefferson College senior quarterback Bobby Swallow has been selected as one of 10 finalists for the prestigious Gagliardi Trophy. The Gagliardi Trophy has become one of the leading collegiate football awards and is widely recognized as the premier individual award in Division III football, honoring excellence in athletics, academics, and community service. Alumni fans can vote for Swallow online at http://www.d3football.com. Do your home team proud!
Fall Sports Wrap-Up
Washington & Jefferson College celebrated one of its most successful fall seasons in school history recently with five teams qualifying for postseason tournaments. The football and women’s soccer (team photo featured left) teams highlighted the fall season. As noted above, the football team is still alive in the NCAA playoffs and is one victory shy of tying the school record for wins in a season. The women’s soccer program re-wrote the school record books during its PAC Championship season and became the first women’s team in history to win a NCAA Tournament game after defeating Marywood (Pa.) on penalty kicks. In addition, the field hockey, volleyball, and men’s soccer teams earned invitations to the ECAC Division III Tournaments. Erin Long ’08 earned her fourth-straight All-Region Award for the women’s cross country team, and the men’s water polo squad placed third at the Division III Eastern Championships. The women’s tennis team came on strong at the end of the season to place fifth at the conference championship tournament
