W&J Women's Water Polo Posted The Nation's Second-Best Team Grade Point Average During The Spring Semester
Washington & Jefferson College believes intercollegiate athletics can be an integral part of the educational process. All students are invited to compete for positions on intercollegiate or intramural teams. W&J is a member of the Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Association (ECAC), and Division III of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in both men's and women's varsity sports.
Over the past decade, several W&J athletes and teams achieved outstanding success. The College's varsity teams have won more than 40 PAC championships, 37 students were selected as conference MVPs, over 300 W&J athletes were awarded First Team All-Conference recognition, 31 received All-American honors, and 20 achieved Academic All-American status.
The football team has won 19 of the last 21 PAC Championships and advanced to the NCAA Division III playoffs 17 times, including two trips to the NCAA Division III National Championship Game (1992, 1994). In addition to the team's successes, W&J football players received a great deal of individual recognition, including 12 conference MVP awards and more than 120 First Team All-Conference selections. During that same time, six players were named to the Associated Press All-American Team and four players received an NCAA post-graduate scholarship.
During this same period, the baseball, women's basketball, wrestling, men's and women's swimming and diving, volleyball, softball, men's and women's soccer, women's track and field and men's and women's golf teams have all won conference championships.
Women's varsity sports have been honored with more than a dozen conference MVP selections and five All-Americans in basketball. Most recently, Kaitlyn Orstein '08 won eight national swimming championships and set three national records in the process.
The intramural program offers a wide selection of athletics. Participation is characterized by informality and enthusiasm as close, personal relationships color these events with friendly, traditional rivalries. Approximately 50 percent of the student body participates in intramurals.
W&J places an emphasis on all of its student-athletes to strive for success on the playing fields, while reaching for even higher standards of success in the classroom.
