HHMI Intersession Internship Support Proposal Form

To be considered for a research internship in January, you must complete the following steps:

1. See the "Internships" listing on the Biology Home Page. See your Biology Advisor or Dr. Lee for possibilities. If you have arranged something on your own, it may be possible to apply for HHMI support.

2. To be considered for an HHMI-sponsored internship you must meet the following criteria: Minimum GPA of 3.0, a minimum of three courses in Biology by the December preceding the internship, and a minimum of three courses in Chemistry by the December preceding the internship.

3. To request financial support for housing or travel, complete (TYPE) this form, copy it, send one copy with your transcript to the off-campus sponsor and return your copy to Dr. Lee by October 25.

4. Acquire an Independent Study Form (299J) from the Dean’s Office. Complete it. You will have to submit a written proposal and a letter from the sponsoring scientist; the information on THIS form will suffice.  However, you should fill out the form and have Dr. Lee sign it.

5. Return the Independent Study Form (299J) to Dr. Lee by October 25. She will want to speak with you briefly about the project. She will also explain to you about the journal you will keep and the scientific poster you will prepare about your research experience.

6. DO NOT preregister for an Intersession course. The Dean's Office will register you for 299J, which is a graded course.

7. Your poster and journal are due to Dr. Lee when you return from Intersession.

8. You will also be asked to give one or more oral presentation during the year following your HHMI sponsored internship.

9. Your work will be evaluated in the following manner:

I will serve as off-campus advisor to ________________________________ (name of student) during the ________ (year) Intersession. The student and I have discussed the project and the reading and preparation he or she will do before the internship begins. I have received the student’s proposal, have a copy of his or her transcript and feel that this student will be adequately prepared for the internship. The student will work approximately 40 hours a week for four weeks. In addition, the student will have an opportunity to present his or her research in my laboratory at the end of January. I will then supply a short written evaluation of the student and assign a letter grade for the work he or she completed. The evaluation and grade are due to Alice Lee by February 1.

I expect the student to be familiar with the following techniques before the internship:
