Biology at
Washington & Jefferson College
HHMI:
Undergraduate
Science Education Program Student Outcomes, 1996 to Present
The quality of biology teaching, learning, and research at
W&J has benefited tremendously
from the support of the HHMI.
HHMI grants in 1996 ($600,000) and 2000 ($700,000) have supported
initiatives in a broad range of activities.
In the past seven years, students who have earned degrees in biology
and in the sciences (over 700 students, equaling 40% of all graduates)
have benefited from HHMI-supported improvements to the curriculum: new
and revised courses, greater interdisciplinary connections, improved
laboratory facilities, enhanced research instrumentation, peer tutoring
support, new faculty, and training for current faculty.
Since 1996, 96
students have participated directly in HHMI-sponsored research programs
on and off campus, ranging from course-related research projects to ten-week
off-campus summer experiences in some of the nation’s leading medical research
labs.
HHMI support has enabled faculty and students to pursue 62 on-campus
research projects during the regular term. Support has also allowed 10 students
and 4 faculty members to conduct 10-week summer research projects
during the first three years of the summer on-campus research program. Learn more about
students who conducted on-campus research with HHMI support:

HHMI has supported 63 off-campus research internships. Learn more about

Students have also been able to present their research to their peers at a number of regional and
national scientific conferences. Learn more about student presentations:

Of the 74 students supported for research by HHMI since 1996 who have graduated,
27 have gone to medical school,
24 have entered Ph.D. programs and 2 have begun M.D./Ph.D. programs.
The Washington, Pennsylvania, community has benefited from greater
access to the College’s expertise in the sciences, with more than 40 school
teachers and hundreds of local school children participating in HHMI-supported
outreach.
