Intriguing Internships from the Class of 2007:

Laura B. Miller (First row, far right)
Major: English, Pre-Health Program
Study Abroad Program: Infectious Disease Program, Mumbai, India
"During summer 2006, I traveled to Mumbai, India, to study infectious diseases in hospitals and
clinics around the region. I went with a nonprofit organization, Child Family Health International,
that is working to better healthcare all over the world by increasing physician retention rates and
by providing supplies for hospitals in need. Medical and pre-medical students from all of the
United States and the world attended this program. We traveled to different hospitals and clinics
each week, exploring lower-class hospitals in the slums of Mumbai, a leprosy hospital, rural
clinics in Virar, and upper-class hospitals, which are very similar to U.S. hospitals. During the
evenings, we rotated throughout clinics, where the physicians were bombarded with patients. I
was given opportunities to examine patients, learn about the huge variety of parasitic infections,
see the devastation of diseases like HIV, attend surgeries, and see many secondary infections
like tuberculosis, which is rampant in Mumbai. I've never had an experience so fulfilling. I
observed the unsightly and the sundar (beautiful), the depressing and the joyous. Yes, people
did take advantage of me, the white foreigner, but what stands out the most is the beauty that I
saw in the people and in the doctors who are working so hard for these people. This was a
wonderful, valuable experience and I am so grateful that I was given this opportunity to study
healthcare in India."

Hillary A. Smith
Major: Economics
Internship: Finance internship at the Late Show with David Letterman
"I spent the fall semester of 2005 at the Late Show with David Letterman. I prepared weekly
finance reports for Worldwide Pants and CBS, input invoices and cut checks, managed and
recorded petty cash transactions, attended production meetings, sat in the control room during
show tapings, and watched the show tape live from my office every day. I also took a course at
NYU as well as dance classes at Broadway Dance Center. This has been an absolutely
wonderful experience. I have learned so much while having so much fun. This was not a "photo
copying and coffee getting" internship. CBS trusts its interns completely, which made the
experience incredibly valuable."
