Intriguing Internships from the Class of 2009:

Brittany Anderton
(Ellis Hyman Award Recipient)
Major: Cell/Molecular Biology
Internship: Paul W. Zuccaire Internship Program at Institut Pasteur in Paris, France
"I conducted research full-time for ten weeks and was assigned my own project, which involved
analysis of innate and adaptive immune responses in a mouse model lacking plasmacytoid
dendritic cells. While in Europe I was able to travel to both Cologne and Amsterdam, and even
met up with two other W&J students! My experience this summer has cemented my wish to
pursue a career in biomedical research."

Travis Bui-Klimke
Major: General Biology
Internship: AM Health & Safety in Carnegie, PA
"During my internship, I learned to test and evaluate workers conditions such as air quality, heat
stress and noise in a variety of settings that include steel plants, railroads and other industrial
areas."

Alison Dougherty
(Ellis Hyman Award Recipient)
Major: International Business
Internship: Marketing Department of Firmenich in Geneva, Switzerland
"During my internship I was able to expand my knowledge of the marketing world, specifically
the fine fragrances market. I practiced my marketing skills through a fragrance survey of twenty
American females between the ages of 20 and 25. My boss was looking to find out which
fragrances this demographic preferred and how they differed from European women’s
preferences within this age group. After graduating in May, I hope to live in Europe working for
a marketing firm dealing with international products and launches."

Maggie Eshleman
(Ellis Hyman Award Recipient)
Major: General Biology
Internship: Koch Regional Perfusion Cancer Therapy Center in Pittsburgh, PA
"The first weeks of my internship involved solely collecting information for the database. The
database is used to collect information on the patients that have had hyperthermic
chemoperfusion which is an experimental procedure. Through the internship I learned many
things about types of cancer, treatment methods, and hyperthermic chemoperfusion. This
internship was a valuable experience that I will be able to take with me as I apply to medical
school."

Stephanie Ferimer
Major: Biochemistry
Internship: Health Hope Network Stroke Survivor Connection, Carol Glock
"Stephanie co-planned an exercise program for stroke survivors with a fellow student.
Went to program site to co-lead and demonstrate the exercises for a specific stroke
survivor connection program group in the South Hills.
This internship gave me the opportunity to learn more about the risk factors and
symptoms of stroke. I was able to tour the Stroke Institute at UPMC Presbyterian to
learn more about treatment of stroke patients from the minute they are evaluated at the
Emergency Department until they are discharged. I attended a symposium where
presenters provided information on seeking care when you have stroke-like symptoms
and current research and treatments for stroke. Additionally, I was able to learn about
what stroke survivors and their families can do to seek support after having a stroke. The
Health Hope Network provides a holistic program for stroke survivors to help improve
overall wellness. Since I am interested in Sports Medicine, I enjoyed helping with the
physical stimulation aspect of the program by helping to develop and exercise program
for stroke survivors. The group was very supportive of one another and encouraged
others to try out the exercises. I have had a very positive experience with the internship
and hope to continue my involvement with the program in some way next year."

Angela Fronzaglio
Major: English
Internship: Micronic North America, LLC
"All I can really say about my internship was that it was just great; Micronic is a great place to learn and work and I felt totally at home there. The environment at the office is helpful and encouraging, and I have learned so much in my month and a half of working there! There is really no experience like doing the actual work, and seeing how your efforts affect the company's business. Because of how well the internship worked out, I've been offered a position there, part-time during semesters, and full-time on breaks, as well as full-time once I graduate. I cannot begin to tell you how excited (and relieved!) that I am, and truly thrilled about the whole experience. Hopefully, a new W&J student will find Micronic to be as good a place to begin a career as I have! Thank you for your help in setting this position up; the Career Services office is a truly invaluable asset. This internship is sponsored by Micronic President, Jim Mortimer '76."

David Hay
(Ellis Hyman Award Recipient)
Major: Cell/Molecular Biology
Internship: Dr. Robert Petcash '88 - Oral Surgery
"David observed surgeries, procedures, and attended conferences. One of the conferences was on the topic of bone grafting techniques. David has witnessed an orthognathic (jaw) surgery to correct sleep apnea and a tongue surgery on a 6 month old. "

Martina Helfferich
Majors: English, Spanish
Concentration: Professional Writing
Internship: Vertigo Publishers through the University of Dreams (www.summerinternships.com) internship program in Barcelona, Spain
"After spending countless hours last spring researching internship opportunities, I finally found a
program that guaranteed my employment working for an international publishing company,
Vertigo Publishers, in the heart of Barcelona. I was fortunate to find an internship targeting both
of my majors. I elected to work in an office where Spanish communication, writing,
comprehension, and translation were required at an advanced level. I gained experience
communicating, writing, and speaking Spanish as well as experience copy-editing, creative
writing, and translation in English. I primarily worked on research projects for upcoming
published books on international architecture and developed indices and persuasive
introductions in English for presentations to other major publishing companies. In addition to
working five days per week, I also had the opportunity to go river trekking in the Pyrenees,
watch a delightful presentation of a traditional Flamenco performance while feasting on a
multiple course meal, travel to the island of Mallorca for a weekend, along with other exciting
excursions through the University of Dreams summer internship program. I am happy to say I
had the best summer of my life as well as one of the most promising experiences that will surely
benefit my future aspirations and goals in the professional writing field."

Laura Herbeck
(Ellis Hyman Award Recipient)
Major: Environmental Studies
Internship: World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Market Transformation Network Initiative in Washington D.C.
"The goal of the Market Transformation Network Initiative was to research and find the top ten
companies within specific commodities that they could in turn contact and potentially convince
to better their habits, which would not impact their surrounding environment as much, as well as
preserve the endangered species threatened areas of their industries. I was able to gain vital
experience important in the field of Environmental Studies that will help me to finish my last
year with confidence in my capstone topic as well as better research capabilities and newly
learned skills in executing an effective presentation."

Jarel Settles
(Ellis Hyman Award Recipient)
Major: Business Administration
Internship: Universal Music Group in Los Angeles, California
"One of the tasks I was given was to perform street checks which means checking to make sure
our partners (iTunes, Napster, and Rhapsody) have our songs displayed and that customers can
buy the music in the right format. I was also given the opportunity to attend performances by
some of UMG’s newest performers. This internship helped me get on the road to success in the
music industry."

Sharon Shi
(Ellis Hyman Award Recipient)
Major: Business Administration
Internship: Denuo and Play, a division of the Starcom Corporation, in Los Angeles, California
"Throughout my internship, I worked on various projects, including researching gaming trends
and statistics, conducting various competitive analysis’ on companies of interest, wrote an article
for Play’s monthly newsletter, and my summer project completing an in-depth competitive
analysis for Play clients in which I presented to the internal team at the conclusion of the
summer. I learned more about the media and gaming industry that I thought I would ever learn
and grew to appreciate the work that is put into the video game industry."
