College Awards

Each year, owing to the generous donations by the college, alumni, former faculty, and professional organizations, the chemistry department honors its outstanding students by awarding a series of departmental prizes and awards. These prizes and awards are listed below along with a brief description of the award and the criteria for selection.

  • Adlai E. Michaels Prize - This cash prize is awarded to an outstanding sophomore chemistry major in honor of Dr. Adlai E. Michaels, Professor of Chemistry at W & J from 1959 to 1983.
  • Roy W. Sonntag Award - This non-cash award is given annually to a worthy member of a local chapter subsidized up to $50 by the national budget. The criteria for choosing the worthy member and the nature of the award are left to the local chapter.
  • DeLap-Holcomb Scholarship - This merit-based cash award is presented to a junior or senior chemistry major or minor. The award is presented annually at the discretion of the chapter advisor and is funded by the national budget.
  • Jesse W. Lazear Book Prize - These prizes consist of books to be awarded at Honors Day to the highest and second highest ranking upperclassmen (junior or senior) within the department. The student must have an overall G.P.A. of 2.33, a departmental average of 3.33 or higher, and must have completed chemistry courses through CHM 360. Other factors, including contributions to the department, attitude, and initiative, are considered in the selection process.
  • Nicholas C. and Josephine C. Tucci Award - This award is presented at commencement to an outstanding junior chemistry major. The criteria for the award are left to the discretion of the chemistry faculty.
  • Outstanding Freshman Chemistry Award - This award is given to the freshman student with the best overall performance in Chemistry 160 and 170. The award consists of a copy of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, published by the Chemical Rubber Company (CRC) Press.
  • Outstanding Senior Chemistry Major Award - The Society for Analytical Chemists of Pittsburgh (SACP) presents a cash award to honor a senior chemistry major for excellent performance in the study of chemistry. The award is presented at a SACP dinner meeting in Pittsburgh which honors all awardees from various colleges and universities in the Pittsburgh area. A plaque located in Troutman library lists the past college recipients.
  • Samuel Jones Prize - The Samuel Jones Prize alternates yearly between the department of chemistry and physics. The cash award is presented at graduation to the student achieving the highest score on an examination prepared by the department awarding the prize. Any W & J student is eligible to sit for the chemistry exam which covers material from CHM 160, 170, 260, 270 and 360.
  • Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry - This award, sponsored by the Analytical Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society, consists of a subscription to the journal Analytical Chemistry and an honorary membership in the Division of Analytical Chemistry of the ACS. The award is to encourage interest in the field of analytical chemistry and is given by the chemistry staff to a junior chemistry major who displays an aptitude and demonstrates an interest in the field of analytical chemistry.
  • Daniel Latchney Prize - This book prize is awarded by the Committee on Health Professions to an outstanding junior or senior chemistry major who is registered in the pre-health program. The student must exhibit distinguished academic achievement and good character. This prize was created in memory of Daniel Latchney, M.D., W & J Class of 1978 by his wife, Lisa (W & J '78) and his daughters, Jessica and Sarah.
