W&J OPENS 2010 SEASON WITH 5-1 VICTORY AT KENYON (9/1)
GAMBIER, Ohio – Washington & Jefferson College senior Kim Marcius (Westmoreland City, Pa./Norwin) and sophomore Jennifer Marabella (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) both scored a pair of goals to lead the Presidents to a season-opening 5-1 field hockey victory Wednesday at Kenyon College.
The Presidents (1-0) struck first just 26 seconds into the match as Marabella found the back of the net.
The score remained the same until two minutes before halftime when Marcius fired in back-to-back goals in an 86-second span. Her first goal came on a penalty corner at the 33:06 mark and she added another 28 seconds before the first-half horn for a three-goal lead.
Senior midfielder Kolbey Seidel (Oley, Pa./Exeter) set up Marabella’s second goal five minutes into the second half and freshman Alexandra Kania (Greensburg, Pa./Greensburg Central Catholic) made it a 5-0 game with four minutes remaining.
The shutout bid ended with 44 seconds left as Sarah McNee scored for the Ladies (0-1).
Junior goalie Shelby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda) played the first half and made six saves. The Presidents held a 23-13 shot advantage and attempted 14 of the match’s 18 penalty corners.
The Presidents, who have won four consecutive season openers, return to action next Wednesday at Wittenberg (5:30 pm).
