Considering the alarming economic indicators of late, we want to assure you that our office is actively monitoring trends and working with our students on developing their particular strategies for securing opportunities (whether employment, internship or graduate & professional school). Happily, student traffic in our office is on the rise.
We are pleased to announce the addition of a new online system, College Central Network (CCN), which allows students and alumni to access full-time, internship, part-time, and summer opportunities. Students and alumni are able to connect with employers, post resumes and cover letters, and in the near future create portfolios. There are typically over 50,000 national postings and numerous postings specific to W&J. New jobs are added daily, including entry-level jobs from nearly 150 newspapers. College Central also features over 1,000 career articles written by industry professionals to help guide you in your career exploration. We are also a member of the Liberal Arts Recruiting Consortium (LARC), comprised of 8 Greater Pittsburgh area Colleges and Universities, who will share local postings.
We are also pleased to report that there are employers hiring. An encouraging indication was the number of employers that recruited on our campus this fall. When benchmarked with several of our peer institutions, we had a very successful fall with 27 companies/organizations actually on campus - an excellent showing for a campus our size in these times. Our fall job fair, sponsored with our consortium, has over 95 registered employers.
While no industry is "recession proof," our research suggests that there will be opportunities in health care, accounting, federal government, technology, energy industry (especially alternative fuel) and human services.
Please encourage your student to work with our department. In addition to the classic assistance on resumes, cover letters, interviewing, pre-health portfolios, personal statements, and business/dining etiquette, we are urging students to develop the skill of "networking." We have resources on this topic available on-line and in our office. Parents can be a tremendous resource in helping their student complete a thorough 'inventory' of their network. As you well know, this will be an especially important skill in challenging times.
We also recognize that these times challenge our need to be a bit more flexible. We encourage students to consider options with a 'bigger picture' in mind.
Please keep us in mind if your organization has any employment or internship opportunities. Also, consider serving as a resource to the W&J students by fielding questions about your own career paths.
