Kim Marcius, 2010 Season preview2010 WASHINGTON & JEFFERSON SEASON PREVIEW (8/23)

Washington & Jefferson College returns 16 letter winners from last year's squad which made its third-straight appearance in the Empire 8 Tournament Championship Match.  The Presidents have yet to capture the conference title, but seniors Kim Marcius {pictured}, Kolbey Seidel and Julianne Zackey are determined to end that trend in 2010.

The senior trio is 12 victories shy of setting the school record for wins by a senior class.  Rachel Mastromarino '10 earned that mark last fall after being a part of 46 career wins.

Seidel and Zackey have started all 54 matches since arriving on campus.  Both players have contributed 14 career assists, while Zackey (15) enters her final collegiate season one goal ahead of Seidel (14).

Last fall, Seidel joined Beth Kelley '08 as the only other player in school history selected to the All-Region Team.  Seidel was second in the Empire 8 in assists per match and fifth in defensive saves.  She amassed 10 points (1 goal, 8 assists) and posted a pair of defensive saves in 15 appearances.

Zackey led the Presidents in scoring a year ago with five goals and nine assists.  She has been selected to the all-conference team in each of her three seasons on campus, including first-team laurels the last two years.

Marcius is a two-year starter who has compiled eight goals and two assists.  She has played in 43 career matches and looks to increase her scoring production even more in 2010.

Sophomore Jennifer Marabella's nine goals a year ago was the third-highest total in the league.  She was a second-team All-E8 choice and will spearhead an offense which returns 94 percent of its goal scoring production from last season.  Classmates Erin Barno (2g, 2a), Arielle King (3g) and Amanda Pflumm (1g) will add scoring punch, while junior Liz Turcik and sophomores Meaghan Thornlow, Julia Brenner and Elizabeth Herb aim to continue their strong work in the midfield.  A two-sport athlete, Turcik led W&J women's lacrosse to a record-breaking season this past spring.

Junior Hannah Lott has started all 36 games over the past two seasons and is a steadying force in the W&J defensive backfield.  Her three defensive saves tied for third in the league and she added four goals.

In goal, juniors Shelby Colyer and Roslynn Reynoso have logged nearly every minute over the past two seasons.  Reynoso owns a 9-6 career record, while Colyer has recorded 113 saves.

Along with 16 returning players, Coghlan added nine freshman and a new assistant coach, Domineque Scott, to the program during the offseason.  Factor in a 10-game home schedule and the 2010 season has the makings of a special year for W&J field hockey.

Zackey E8W&J PICKED THIRD IN EMPIRE 8 FIELD HOCKEY PRESEASON POLL (8/12)

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Empire 8 Conference released its preseason field hockey coaches poll on Thursday and Washington & Jefferson College was selected to finish third of seven teams.

Two-time defending conference champion Stevens Institute of Technology is the preseason favorite after capturing five first-place votes and 35 points.  Hartwick (2 first-place votes) is second with 31 points followed by W&J (27), Ithaca (20), Utica (16), Nazareth (13) and Elmira (6).

The Presidents joined the Empire 8 in 2006 and have advanced to the conference championship game in all three years of the tournament’s existence.  W&J is still searching for its first E8 title and owns a 15-9 record during regular-season conference play since becoming a league affiliate.

Seniors Julianne Zackey (Easton, Pa./Moravian Academy) {pictured} and Kolbey Seidel (Oley, Pa./Exeter) will lead the Presidents this fall as returning First Team All-Empire 8 performers.  Zackey contributed five goals and nine assists last year, while Seidel had one goal and eight assists.

Head Coach Jomara Coghlan returns 15 letter winners and nine starters from last season’s 8-8 squad.  W&J returns 94 percent of its scoring production from a year ago as well as two goalies, juniors Roslynn Reynoso (Fallbrook, Calif./Fallbrook) and Shelby Colyer (Oxford, Ohio/Talawanda), who combined to play 98 percent of the team’s minutes and posted 87 saves and a 1.56 goals-against average.

Washington & Jefferson opens its season Sept. 1 at Kenyon (5:30 pm).  W&J and Kenyon have not met since a 1-0 Presidents’ victory at Cameron Stadium on Sept. 30, 2007.
