K. SeidelKOLBEY SEIDEL BECOMES SECOND PLAYER IN SCHOOL HISTORY TO EARN ALL-REGION AWARD (11/19)

2009 Longstreth/NHFCA All-Region Teams

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College junior midfielder Kolbey Seidel (Oley, Pa./Exeter), a First Team All-Empire 8 honoree, was selected to the 2009 Longstreth/NFHCA Second Team Division III All-North Atlantic Region team.

Seidel becomes the second W&J field hockey player in school history to earn All-Region recognition.  Beth Kelley (‘08) was the program’s first all-region selection in 2007.

Seidel was second in the league in assists per match and fifth in defensive saves.  She amassed 10 points (1 goal, 8 assists) and posted a pair of defensive saves in 15 appearances. 

She has also started 54 matches throughout her career and has contributed 14 goals and 14 assists.  Seidel has racked up 129 shots and netted four game-winning goals.

Seidel and classmate Julianne Zackey (Easton, Pa./Moravian Academy), who have posted a career record of 35-21, need 12 victories next season to become the most successful field hockey players in W&J history.  Senior Rachel Mastromarino (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) currently holds the distinction after finishing her career with 46 wins.

Washington & Jefferson completed its 2009 schedule with an 8-8 overall record.  The Presidents played in the Empire 8 Tournament Championship Match for the third consecutive season, but dropped a 3-1 decision to 19th ranked Stevens in Hoboken, New Jersey.

Ju. Zackey #15ZACKEY AND SEIDEL NAMED FIRST TEAM ALL-EMPIRE 8 (11/11)

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College juniors Julianne Zackey (Easton, Pa./Moravian Academy) {left} and Kolbey Seidel (Oley, Pa./Exeter) {below} highlighted four Presidents selected Wednesday to the All-Empire 8 Conference Field Hockey Teams. 

In addition, senior Rachel Mastromarino (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) was named W&J’s Empire 8 Sportswoman of the Year.  Mastromarino was selected after distinguishing herself and consistently exhibiting the critical traits as an outstanding sportswoman.  The Empire 8 emphasizes that “Competing with Honor and Integrity” is an essential component of a student-athlete’s experience in conjunction with an institution’s educational mission.

Freshman forward Jennifer Marabella (Sinking Spring, Pa./Holy Name) was a second-team All-E8 choice, while sophomore midfielder Hannah Lott (Aspers, Pa./Biglerville) garnered honorable-mention recognition. 

Zackey earns a spot on the all-conference team for the third-straight season, including back-to-back first-team nods.  She was an honorable-mention choice as a freshman.  Zackey finished the 2009 campaign with five goals and nine assists for 19 points in 16 matches.  She had one game-winning goal and was 10th in the league with 41 shots.  Zackey led the Empire 8 in assists per match, while ranking third in points per game and 10th in goals per match. 

In 54 career matches (has started all 54), Zackey has 15 goals and 14 assists for 44 points.  She has attempted 127 shots and owns three game-winning goals.

Seidel #11Seidel, a 2008 second-team All-E8 honoree, was second in the league in assists per match and fifth in defensive saves.  She amassed 10 points (1 goal, 8 assists) and posted a pair of defensive saves in 15 appearances.  Seidel has also started 54 matches throughout her career and has contributed 14 goals and 14 assists.  She has racked up 129 shots and netted four game-winning goals. 

Marabella led the Presidents in her rookie year with nine goals on 41 shot attempts.  He led the Empire 8 in goals per match, was second in points per match and ranked third in goals and game-winning goals (3). 

Lott solidified the Presidents’ defense and tied for third in the conference with three defensive saves.  She added four goals on only 11 shot attempts, including one game-winning goal.  Lott has started all 36 games over the past two seasons and has totaled eight goals and three assists for 19 points.  She has three game-winning scores and has notched five defensive saves.

Mastromarino graduates as the most successful field hockey player with 46 career victories.  She played 74 games and started 62 times.  The three-time NHFCA National Academic Squad honoree amassed 16 career points with five goals and six assists.
