Several new Presidents will enter their first collegiate seasons when the Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team arrives for preseason camp, including the head coach.
It's tough for any team to replace quality seniors, but for First-Year Head Coach Greg Jones, his team must replace two All-Americans. Jones is coaching the men's squad for the first time after being hired in December. He helped the women's squad record 10 victories in the spring.
Steve Hilty and John Todd both earned honorable-mention honors on the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches Division III All-America Team. It was Todd's second-straight All-America award after earning the same honorable-mention accolade in 2008. Hilty finished tied for 32nd among all NCAA divisions in goals last season with 51 (2.32 gpg). He helped the Washington & Jefferson offense rank 19th in the country with an average of 10.0 goals per match.
Replacing Hilty's goal production and Todd's play in net won't be an easy task, but the Presidents have young talent to lean on.
Junior Andy Rish, coming off a 24-goal season, will be expected to step up his scoring. Rish, an all-conference swimmer in the winter, should have help from sophomore Joey Weiland {pictured} whose 31 goals were good enough for second on the team. Weiland also contributed 14 assists.
Senior Bill Krause looks to build on a season in which he scored at least one goal in nine different matches and sophomore Cameron Chaves will also look to improve on his 17-goal effort last fall.
Seniors Chris Hosking and Nathan Steiner look to provide leadership as two of the three seniors on the squad.
The team will look different on defense, with a preseason battle between freshmen Dan Francisco and Carlos Padron to decide who takes over in the cage. Jones will face this decision and more as preseason camp commences.
