W&J MEN'S WATER POLO SEASON PREVIEW (8/25)
The Washington & Jefferson College men's water polo team returns to campus next week with high hopes for the 2009 campaign under third-year Head Coach Vaughan Smith.
The 2009 season is expected to be an exciting one as the Presidents will serve as hosts for the Division III Eastern Championships (Oct. 24-25) at the Henry Memorial Natatorium. The field will include 11-time Eastern Champion Johns Hopkins. Washington & Jefferson is looking to return to the title match for the first time since 2007.
The Presidents will be without the services of All-American Andrew Whittam and four-year starter Eddie Werner, who graduated in the spring, but senior All-America goalie John Todd {above} returns to serve as the anchor of the squad. Todd, a 2008 Eastern Championships All-Tournament Team selection, finished as one of the nation's save leaders a year ago with 343 (12.7 saves per match) in his first year as a full-time starter. He also set a school record with 30 saves against Division I Harvard last September.
Todd is joined by four other seniors, Chris Blueher, Steve Hilty, William Kidston and Dan Martin. This group looks to help the Presidents post their first double-digit victory total since 2004. Hilty fired in 23 goals a year ago, including three hat tricks, while Blueher, Kidston and Martin are versatile players who are expected to increase their offensive production in 2009. Hilty was also an Eastern Championship All-Tournament Team choice.
Smith will also rely on sophomore Andy Rish, the team's leading returning scorer after compiling 25 goals in 2008. Rish netted a season-high three goals twice against Penn State-Behrend. Junior Bill Krause is another talent who Smith is expecting improvement from both offensively and defensively.
The Presidents are also hoping that four freshmen can contribute from the start of the season. Alex Shuey and Joey Weiland bring solid resumes from Pennsylvania high schools, while Mike Johnson (Naperville, Ill.) and Cameron Chaves (La Canada, Calif.) will also compete for starting positions in preseason camp.
The 2009 season begins on Sept. 19th with a road doubleheader at Gannon (1:30 pm) and Penn State-Behrend (7:00 pm) in Erie, Pa.
