THREE W&J BASEBALL PLAYERS NAMED ECAC ALL-STARS (6/4)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College seniors Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary), Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) {right} and Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) were selected to the ECAC Division III Baseball South All-Star Team on Thursday.
Pasquine and Quirin were first-team honorees, while Kennedy earned second-team recognition.
Pasquine, a left fielder and starting pitcher, notched First Team All-PAC and All-Mideast Region honors earlier this season. The two-time PAC Player of the Year batted .456 (68-of-149) in 2010 with 14 doubles, eight home runs and 58 runs batted in. He also stole 21 bases and posted team-high slugging (.752) and and on-base (.530) percentages.
Pasquine was 25th in NCAA Division III in runs per game (1.41) and 29th in batting average. He also ranked 24th in the nation in the toughest to strikeout category (1 K for every 24.8 at-bats) and recorded the 41st-best on-base percentage.
The three-time All-PAC selection finished his career with 13 school records, including career batting average (.432).
Quirin, a first baseman, ended the season with a .404 batting average (72-for-178) and led the Presidents in hits, doubles (17), RBI (64), total bases (125) and at-bats (178). The April 5th PAC Hitter of the Week was third in the country in sacrifice flies (8) and his 64 RBI were the 14th-highest total in NCAA Division III. Quirin was also 29th in the nation in total bases and 47th in hits.
The First Team All-PAC honoree finished his career as the W&J all-time home run leader (22).
Kennedy’s career year also earned him the First Team All-PAC nod at third base. He was second on the squad with a .415 batting average (51-of-123) and tied for second with 14 doubles.
Kennedy amassed three home runs and 28 RBI and scored 25 runs. He was also successful in 11-of-15 stolen base attempts.
He also appeared in nine games as a relief pitcher and allowed only one earned run in 11 1/3 innings (0.79 ERA). Kennedy notched a team-high three saves.
Washington & Jefferson finished the 2010 season with a 32-12 overall record. The Presidents posted a school-record 16 victories in conference play. W&J, the No. 4 seed in the Mideast Regional, earned the PAC’s first at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament since 1984.

PAT KENNEDY SELECTED TO ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA BASEBALL TEAM (5/25)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College junior pitcher Pat Kennedy (Westerville, Ohio/South) was named to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America College Division Baseball Team Tuesday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Kennedy is a second-team choice.
Kennedy, a chemistry major who boasts a 3.94 GPA, is the 26th student-athlete in Washington & Jefferson College history to earn the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA academic award. W&J has 10 two-time All-Americans throughout its rich athletics history, giving the school 36 academic All-America notations since David Damico ’81 earned the first in 1978.
Kennedy joins Sam Mann ’07 as the only baseball players in school history selected as Academic All-Americans. Mann, who earned a NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship during his playing days and currently serves as an assistant baseball coach at Marietta College, was also a second-team choice as a pitcher in 2007.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pound right hander has helped Washington & Jefferson make back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division III Regional Tournament. Kennedy posted a 7-0 record this spring with a 4.72 earned-run average. He made 13 appearances on the mound, including 11 starts, and pitched 61 innings. He struck out 32 batters and twirled a pair of complete games.
Kennedy was selected First Team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference two weeks ago. He also earned second-team all-conference laurels last year. Kennedy has twice been selected to the PAC Spring Academic Honor Roll and will most likely notch his third award in June.
The two-year letter winner owns a 14-2 career record with a 4.24 ERA. Kennedy has taken the hill 27 times over his first three seasons (21 starts) and has pitched 121 innings. He has surrendered 120 hits and has recorded 66 strikeouts.
Last season, Kennedy helped W&J earn its second NCAA victory in school history after shutting down York (Pa.) at the NCAA South Regional in Salisbury, Md. He pitched eight innings during a 4-1 victory and allowed one run on seven hits, while fanning seven Spartans.
Washington & Jefferson finished the 2010 season with a 32-12 overall record. The Presidents, the top-ranked team in the NCAA Mideast Region on April 29th, posted a school-record 16 victories in conference play.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
Kennedy is the seventh W&J student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American during the past three years.

FOUR PRESIDENTS HONORED ON ALL-REGION BASEBALL TEAM (5/24)
WASHINGTON, Pa. — Washington & Jefferson College senior outfielder/right-handed pitcher Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) highlighted four Presidents on the 2010 Division III Rawlings/ABCA All-Mideast Region Baseball Team as a first-team selection. Pasquine will now be placed on the ballot for All-American voting.
Pasquine {left}, the 2009 and 2010 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Player of the Year, earned first-team honors for the second consecutive season, while senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) was a second-team choice. Senior right fielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) and junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) rounded out the W&J players as third-team selections. In addition, Quirin was also named to the All-Mideast Region Gold Glove team.
Pasquine, a three-time First Team All-PAC honoree, led the team with a .456 batting average. Pasquine started 40 games for the Red & Black and tallied 68 hits, 58 runs, 58 RBI, 14 doubles, eight home runs and three triples in 149 at-bats. He also added team-highs in walks (29) and stolen bases (21).
The senior re-wrote the W&J record book during his four-year career, including shattering the school record for career batting average (.432, 221-of-512). He also established six other career school records during his time, including hits (221), runs (165), RBI (153), total bases (331), walks (71) and stolen bases (49). Pasquine is also the single-season record holder in six statistical categories, including games played (49), hits (91), at-bats (189), walks (29), stolen bases (21) and total bases (138).
Quirin {left}, who transferred to W&J from Wooster prior to his sophomore season, earned second-team laurels after posting one of the most explosive offensive campaigns in recent history. He ended the season with a .404 batting average and led the team in hits (72), doubles (17), RBI (64), total bases (125) and at-bats (178) in 44 total games. He was also honored as the PAC Hitter of the Week on April 5th.
The First Team All-PAC first baseman finished his career as the all-time home run leader in school history with 22 career round trippers. He broke the single-season school record this spring for doubles and RBI and is second in W&J history with a .365 career batting average. Quirin is also second in the W&J record book for career runs batted in (146), career total bases (293), single-season total bases (125) and single-season hits (72).
With the Gold Glove recognition, Quirin will now be placed on the ballot for the National Gold Glove team.
The 5-foot-11 senior finished the season with a .993 fielding percentage after committing just three errors in 422 chances. He also tallied 403 putouts, 16 assists and played a role in 42 double play combinations.
Quirin, Bogdewiecz and junior center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) were staples of the Presidents’ defensive unit all season as they were the only three players to start in all 44 games at their respective positions.
Pascarella, another First Team All-PAC outfielder, set the program’s single-season home run record this season after blasting 12 homers. In 40 games, he collected a .341 batting average with 50 RBI, 35 runs scored and 13 doubles.
Pascarella owns the fifth-best career batting average in school history at .344 (143-of-416). His 18 home runs and 35 doubles are both third in W&J’s 120-year baseball history. Pascarella amassed 110 runs batted in during his 129 games played in a Red & Black uniform.
As the First Team All-PAC shortstop, Bogdewiecz {left} served as the catalyst for the Presidents’ offense from the leadoff spot. He ended the season hitting .371 and set the school record for runs after crossing the plate 70 times. Bogdewiecz also added 62 hits, 35 RBI, 27 walks and 19 stolen bases in 44 games.

PRESIDENTS' SEASON ENDS WITH LOSS TO MARIETTA AT MIDEAST REGIONAL (5/20)
MARIETTA, Ohio - Third-seeded and host Marietta College opened a seven-run lead through four innings and recorded an 11-1 victory over fourth-seeded Washington & Jefferson College Thursday evening in an elimination game of the 2010 NCAA Division III Mideast Baseball Regional at Don Schaly Stadium.
Marietta advances to play its third-straight elimination game Friday against the Adrian-Thomas More winner, while W&J ends its season with a 32-12 record. The Presidents have won 30 or more games four times in the past five years.
The Pioneers (33-13) got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the second inning after two hits and one President error resulted in three runs. Freshman right fielder Jordan Grilliot and sophomore shortstop Tim Saunders produced RBI singles, while junior left fielder Britt Meador added a sacrifice fly.
W&J narrowed the deficit to 3-1 in the fourth as seniors left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) {above} and catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) strung together back-to-back singles and senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) brought home Pasquine with a sacrifice fly.
Marietta stretched its lead to 9-1 with six runs in the fourth. Senior catcher Dan Jones doubled home a pair of runs, while sophomore second baseman Kirby Becker tacked on a RBI triple.
Junior Casey Levens earned the win on the mound for the Pioneers after tossing the first six innings and limiting the Presidents to four singles and a double. He struck out six batters, added two hits at the plate and scored a pair of runs. Grilliot crossed the plate three times and MC banged out 14 hits
Sophomore Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) suffered the loss after surrendering eight runs (four earned) on six hits in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out two and walked one. Pasquine was the only President with a multi-hit game after going 2-for-3 with a single and a double. The two-time PAC Player of the Year finishes his career with a school-record 221 base hits.
The Presidents ended the season with four-straight losses, their first four-game skid since March 21-25, 2005. W&J played 263 games without losing four in a row.
Washington & Jefferson's 13-member senior class ends its career with 122 victories, the second-most wins over a four-year span in school history. W&J also won two Presidents' Athletic Conference Championships during their time on campus and made the school's first two appearances in the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament.

W&J UPENDED BY ADRIAN IN OPENING GAME OF NCAA MIDEAST REGIONAL (5/19)
MARIETTA, Ohio - Senior left fielder Alex Cowart went 5-for-6 at the plate and Adrian College scored twice in the top of the 10th inning to earn a 9-7 victory over Washington & Jefferson College in the opening game of the 2010 NCAA Mideast Regional Baseball Tournament on Wednesday morning at Don Schaly Stadium.
With the loss, the Presidents (32-11) will now play in an elimination game tomorrow evening at 7:00 pm in Ohio. W&J will play either Marietta or Wooster.
The Presidents trailed the Bulldogs (30-11) 7-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, but three runs in the seventh and another in the eighth forced extra innings.
Senior right fielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) opened the seventh with a RBI single to center, while senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) drove in a pair of runs on double to right center. Junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) tied the game in the eighth on a single to center field.
AC senior outfielder Andrew Anderson drove in the eventual game winning run in the top of the 10th as he delivered a run-scoring single, while Cowart followed with a RBI base hit.
The Bulldogs jumped ahead early in game one after junior first baseman Jake Cappelletty dropped in a two-out, two-run single to center field. The Red & Black responded and plated a run in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI single to right field off the bat of senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic).
The Presidents evened the score in the bottom of the third inning on a run-scoring double down the right field line by senior Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary).
W&J grabbed its first lead in the bottom of the fifth as Quirin's double fell just inside the right field line. The Presidents nearly won the game in the bottom of the ninth, but junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz's (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) line drive was snared by AC second baseman Steve Vanderheyden with runners on first and second.
Quirin finished the game with two hits, two RBI and one run scored, while junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) added three hits and scored one run scored. Kennedy also tallied two hits for the Red & Black, while senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) drew four walks.

Junior right-hander Jordan Zivoder (Lyndurst, Ohio/Brush) suffered the loss on the mound for the Presidents after allowing two earned runs on three hits in 2 1/3 innings of work, while senior right-hander David Partyka improved to 8-1 on the year after allowing two earned runs on four hits during the final four innings.

NINE PRESIDENTS EARN ALL-PAC BASEBALL HONORS; PASQUINE NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR AGAIN (5/18)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College placed nine players, including six first teamers, on the 2010 All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference Baseball Teams released Tuesday by the conference office. Senior outfielder/right-handed pitcher Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) {pictured} was also chosen as the PAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.
Pasquine earned his third consecutive First Team All-PAC honor, while junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban), who received first-team laurels for a second-straight season, also notched his third-consecutive All-PAC honor. He was a 2008 second-team honoree.

Pasquine earned his second consecutive PAC Player of the Year award after collecting a .455 batting average (65-of-143) through 39 games. The senior also leads the team with a .748 slugging percentage after smacking 12 doubles, eight home runs and three triples. He has also tallied 57 runs batted in , scored 54 runs and stole a team-high 20 bases. Pasquine was named the PAC Hitter of the Week in the final week of the regular season (May 10th).
After being hampered by an arm injury for much of the season, the hard-throwing right-hander returned to form late in the season as he earned two key wins during the final week of the season. Overall, Pasquine is 3-0 on the mound with one save and a 5.26 ERA.
Pasquine, who holds numerous single-season and career records at W&J, is well on his way to becoming the first player in W&J history to finish with an above .400 career batting average. The W&J career hit leader owns a .431 average (218-of-506) heading into NCAA regional play. Current W&J assistant coach Shaun Pfeil ‘07 currently has the top career batting average at .362.
Bogdewiecz, the leadoff hitter, is currently batting .376 and is third in the nation with a school-record 68 runs scored. He has also produced 35 RBI and 22 extra-base hits. The junior shortstop, who was named the PAC Hitter of the Week on April 26th, also leads the team in walks (27) and is second on the squad with 19 stolen bases.
Mike Kennedy, a first-time All-PAC honoree, collected first-team laurels this season after posting a .422 batting average in 34 games. The sure-handed third baseman has committed just eight errors and has tallied 26 RBI, 25 runs scored and 21 extra-base hits.
Pascarella was named to the first team after smacking a school-record 12 homers for the Red & Black. The 2009 second-team selection boasts a .357 batting average with an impressive .736 slugging percentage. He has also drove in 49 runs, scored 34 times and added 13 doubles.
Quirin, a 2009 Second-Team All-PAC performer, is putting together one of the top offensive campaigns in W&J history. Through 42 games, he is hitting .402 with a .713 slugging percentage, including 16 doubles, 10 home runs and three triples. The 16 doubles are a single-season school record. Quirin, who was named the PAC Hitter of the Week on April 5th, leads the team in hits (70) and has driven in a W&J single-season record 61 runs. Quirin also owns the career home run lead at the college with 22.
Pat Kennedy was a second-team selection in 2009 and has posted a 7-0 overall record with a 4.70 earned run average this spring. He also leads the team with two complete game performances. In 59 1/3 innings, he has allowed 31 earned runs and set 32 batters down on strikes, with opposing hitters are batting just .286 against him. Kennedy has not been on the losing end of a pitching decision since May 3, 2009.
Thomchick was named to the second team after hitting .358 (43-of-120) in 37 games. He has also tallied 40 RBI and scored 35 runs to go along with 13 extra base hits (7 homers; 6 doubles). The 2009 Mideast Region Gold Glove catcher has also been solid behind the dish as he has committed only one error in 164 chances and has gunned down 13-of-42 potential stolen base attempts.
Trettel, who earned his first career all-conference award, is one of three Presidents to appear in every game for the Presidents thus far. He is hitting .390 (9 2B, 6 HR and 3 3B) with 61 runs and 47 RBI. Earlier this season he garnered national attention as he recorded the second-longest consecutive game on-base streak in NCAA Division III history after reaching safely in 55 consecutive games. The streak began on April 5, 2009, and came to an end on April 20, 2010.
Trushel, now a two-time all-conference selection after earning 2009 first-team accolades, continues to be one of the top arms in W&J’s starting rotation. In 63 1/3 innings of work, Trushel allowed 27 earned runs for a 3.84 ERA. The April 26th PAC Pitcher of the Week holds a 6-3 overall record and has notched one save.
Thomas More sophomore pitcher Paul Uhl was chosen as the PAC Pitcher of the Year, while Bethany Head Coach Rick Carver was honored as the Coach of the Year after helping the Bison improve by 17 victories from a year ago.
W&J boasts a 32-10 overall record and finished as the regular-season champions in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference for the second consecutive year after posting a mark of 16-2 in league play. Washington & Jefferson has won at least 30 games four times in the past five seasons.
The Presidents, who were defeated in the PAC Tournament Championship games by conference-rival Thomas More, will now compete in the 2010 NCAA Mideast Regional hosted by Marietta College in Ohio after receiving the conference’s first at-large bid into the field of 55 since 1984. W&J opens play Wednesday (May 19) taking on MIAA Champion Adrian College (Mich.) at 9:30 am at Don Schaly Stadium.
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament on Monday and the Presidents have been placed in the Mideast Regional in Marietta, Ohio.
The Presidents (32-10) received the No. 4 seed in the seven-team regional and will face fifth-seeded Adrian (Mich.) in the first game of the tournament Wednesday morning at 9:30 am.
Four-time NCAA Division III national champion Marietta College will serve as the tournament host at Don Schaly Stadium. Schaly Stadium was the site of the NCAA Division III World Series from 1976-1987.
W&J is the first team from the Presidents’ Athletic Conference to receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament since former PAC member John Carroll was selected by the tournament committee in 1984.
Heidelberg (37-6) is the regional’s top seed after winning the Ohio Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships. The Student Princes will face the winner of the W&J-Adrian game Wednesday evening at 8:00 pm.
North Coast Athletic Conference champion and No. 2 seed Wooster (34-7) takes on AMCC Tournament champion and seventh-seeded Penn State-Behrend (29-14) at 4:30 pm. Prior to that contest, third-seeded Marietta (32-11) battles sixth-seeded PAC Tournament champion Thomas More (31-14) at 1:00 pm. Marietta also earned an at-large bid after finishing as the OAC runner-up.
Wednesday morning’s game marks the first-ever meeting between W&J and Adrian. The Bulldogs (29-11) are champions of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Adrian is making its fifth trip to the NCAA Division III Regionals in the past six seasons. AC placed third at last year’s Mideast Regional and captured the 2008 Mideast Region title. The Bulldogs advanced to the 2008 NCAA World Series and placed fourth.
Washington & Jefferson returns to NCAA regional play for a second-straight season. Last year, W&J earned the PAC’s automatic bid and traveled to Salisbury, Md., where it posted a 2-2 record and notched fourth place during its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament.
W&J enters the NCAA Tournament ranked nationally in slugging percentage (.566, 5th), batting average (.365, 6th) and scoring (10.5 rpg, 8th). Adrian owns Division III’s 13th-ranked pitching staff with a 3.75 team ERA. Josh Lancaster leads the staff with an 8-1 record and a 3.57 ERA.
The Presidents are led by eighth-year Head Coach Jeff Mountain, who enters the tournament with a 215-124-1 overall record (.634). Adrian’s Craig Rainey is in his 17th year as the head coach at his alma mater.

THOMAS MORE CAPTURES 2010 PAC BASEBALL TOURNAMENT TITLE (5/15)
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Second-seeded Thomas More College captured its first-ever Presidents' Athletic Conference Baseball Championship after defeating top-seeded and 21st-ranked Washington and Jefferson College in back-to-back games Saturday at Ross Memorial Park. The Saints (31-14) won game one in dramatic fashion, posting a 6-5 come-from-behind victory in 13 innings, before tallying a 2-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Thomas More earned the PAC's automatic bid into the 2010 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament, while the Presidents (32-10) will now wait to see if they are granted one of the 15 possible at-large Pool C bids into the field of 55. The NCAA will release the entire tournament field on Monday morning.
The Presidents entered the ninth inning of game one with a 5-0 lead, but the Saints mounted a comeback and scored five runs on seven hits to force extra innings. After the two squads played three scoreless extra innings, TMC scored an unearned run in the top of the 13th inning.
W&J opened game one with three runs in the top of the first after seniors Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary), Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) connected on consecutive run-scoring hits.
The Presidents tacked on another run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double from senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) and went ahead 5-0 after senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) drove in a run in the seventh.
Junior right-hander Pat Kennedy (Westerville, Ohio/South) was sharp on the mound for the Red & Black as he carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning. He earned the no-decision after allowing three earned runs on six hits in 8 1/3 innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) suffered the loss on the mound after allowing three runs on six hits in the final 4 2/3 innings.
Thomas More sent seven different pitchers to the mound with senior right-hander Kyle Wewe picking up his first victory of the season after throwing seven scoreless innings to close out the game.
Pascarella, Mike Kennedy and junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) each collected three hits in game one, while Sam Schmeltzer paced the Saints with three hits and two runs scored.
The Saints jumped ahead early in game two as they scored a run in the bottom of the first inning. The Presidents, who tied the score in the third following an unearned run, had a number of early scoring chances in game two, but saw four of their first six innings end via a double play.

David Etscheid improved to 3-2 on the season after throwing 5 2/3 scoreless innings, while Wewe again took the ball in game two and earned the save after recording the final four outs. Junior right-hander Jordan Zivoder (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) suffered the loss after allowing two earned runs on six hits in three innings.
Mike Kennedy and Pasquine both tallied two hits in game two, while David Kennett and Nick Ryan also added two hits apiece for the Saints.

PASQUINE'S HOMERS PUT W&J INTO PAC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME (5/14)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson senior pitcher Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) smacked two home runs and pitched six strong innings to help the top-seeded Presidents advance to the 2010 Presidents' Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Championship Game after a 10-5 victory over second-seeded Thomas More Friday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.
W&J (32-8) advances to Saturday's championship round (1:00 pm) where it faces either Thomas More or third-seeded Grove City. Washington & Jefferson clinches the tournament title and automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Regionals with a win. Should TMC or GCC defeat the Presidents in game one, a second championship game would be played immediately after.
Pasquine went 4-for-5 at the plate, drove in four runs and scored three times. On the mound, he limited the Saints (28-14) to four runs (three earned) on six hits in six innings. Senior Mitch McClay (Washington, Pa./Trinity) worked the final three innings and struck out two Saints to record the save.
W&J never trailed after scoring two runs in the first inning. Senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) plated both runs with a single to center field. The lead grew to 4-0 in the third after Pasquine drilled a two-run, opposite-field homer.
The Saints scored two runs in the fourth to slice the lead in half, but another Pasquine opposite-field home run made it a 6-2 game in the fifth. The Presidents put the game out of reach in the sixth with a trio of runs. Sophomore left fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) singled home the first run during the game-clinching inning.
Junior center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) had two hits and scored three runs for W&J, while seniors third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) and second baseman Dave Dimperio (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) both had two hits.
Nick Ryan led the TMC lineup with three hits and three runs batted in. Grant Lewis suffered the loss after allowing four runs on eight hits in four innings of work.
Washington & Jefferson is aiming for its fifth PAC title since 2004.

W&J CRUISES PAST WESTMINSTER 18-9 IN OPENING ROUND OF 2010 PAC TOURNAMENT (5/13)
WASHINGTON, Pa - Senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard) {pictured} went 3-for-3 at the plate, including a grand slam, and collected five runs batted in to help lift the 21st-ranked Washington & Jefferson College to an 18-9 victory against Westminster College on day one of the 2010 Presidents' Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament Thursday at Ross Memorial Park.
The top-seeded Presidents (31-8) aim to return to the PAC Championship round for a second consecutive season as they take on second-seeded Thomas More (28-13) in the winner's bracket game tomorrow at noon in Washington.
TMC defeated Grove City by a score of 6-2 in the opening game. Grove City and Westminster will battle in the first elimination game tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 pm, with the winner taking on the loser of the first game at 6:00 pm.
After holding the Titans (14-26) scoreless in the top of the first inning, the Presidents exploded for six runs with two outs in the bottom of the first. Senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) and senior right fielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) opened the scoring with a pair of RBI singles, while Kennedy capped off the six-run inning with his first career grand slam.
Westminster fought back in the top of the second and scored two runs on two-run double to right center off the bat of Ethan Yeager.
Kennedy added his fifth RBI of the afternoon on a single to center in the third and the Presidents extended their lead to 11-2 after tallying four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning. Senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) plated one with a RBI double to center, while senior designated hitter Dave Dimperio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) added a two-run double.
W&J tacked on single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, and added four more in the eighth. Westminster struck for six runs in the top of the ninth, but it wasn't enough as W&J comfortably posted the nine-run opening round victory.
Sophomore right-hander Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) improved to 6-2 on the season after allowing two earned runs on seven hits in six innings of work, while Ty Miller suffered the loss for the Titans after surrendering 10 earned runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings. Westminster was hurt by seven errors.
Quirin finished the day with four hits, three runs and one RBI, while Thomchick added two hits, two runs and two RBI. Dimperio also contributed two hits, three runs scored and two RBI.

PASQUINE EARNS PAC AWARD AFTER RECORD SETTING WEEK (5/10)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) was named the Presidents' Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
The 6-foot-3 right-handed hitter had a career day at the plate Friday afternoon as the 21st-ranked Presidents clinched hosting rights for the 2010 PAC Tournament with a 22-18 victory over local-rival Waynesburg at Ross Memorial Park in Washington. W&J hosts the conference tournament for the fifth time in the past six seasons, including three times during Pasquine's career.
Pasquine went 4-for-5 at the plate with three home runs, one double, nine RBI and four runs scored. The three homers in a game set a school record, while he also surpassed current W&J assistant coach Shaun Pfeil '07 on the career RBI list with his 147th.
He transferred his success from the plate to the mound on Saturday afternoon as he made his third start of the season and improved to 2-0 after allowing one run on five hits in 6 2/3 innings in W&J's 3-1 victory over the Yellow Jackets in Waynesburg. He set four Waynesburg hitters down on strikes.
On the season, he is leading the team with a .460 batting average and is second on the squad with 92 total bases, 58 hits, 52 RBI, 23 walks, seven sacrifice hits and three triples. He is also the team leader with 19 stolen bases.
Pasquine, who set the single season school record with 91 hits last season, is also the career leader at W&J in total bases (311), runs scored (156) and stolen bases (47). With a .432 (211-of-489) batting average through 147 career games, he is on pace to become the first player in program history to hit over .400 for a career. Pfeil currently has the best four-year average at .362.
The 21st-ranked Presidents finished the regular season with a 30-8 overall record and won their second consecutive PAC regular season championship with a 16-2 mark in league play. W&J is currently third in the NCAA Division III Mideast Region poll, trailing Ohio Athletic Conference powers Heidelberg (34-6) and Marietta (29-9).
The top-seeded Presidents will open the 2010 PAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon, taking on either Bethany or Westminster at 3:00 pm, while No. 2 Thomas More will battle the third-seed Grove City College in the first game on Thursday at noon.
Friday's action begins at noon with a winner's bracket game and Saturday's championship round is scheduled for 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm (if necessary) in Washington.

PASCARELLA SETS HOME RUN MARK IN REGULAR-SEASON FINALE (5/8)
WAYNESBURG, Pa. -- Senior right fielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) broke an 8-8 tie in the nightcap with a two-run homer to help Washington & Jefferson complete a sweep of Waynesburg in a PAC baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. W&J won the first game by a 3-1 margin and completed the series sweep with a 10-8 triumph in game two.
Pascarella set a new school single-season record with his 12th home run of the season. He finished the second game with six runs batted in, helping W&J record its fifth 30-win season in the past six years.
In game one, W&J (30-8, 16-2) took advantage of a Waynesburg error for a 1-0 lead in the fourth, but Waynesburg tied the game on Corey Goeggelman's RBI double.
Washington & Jefferson responded an inning later on senior catcher Mark Thomchick's (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) run-scoring single and senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) singled and scored on an error in the seventh for the game's final margin.

Waynesburg tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but Pascarella's two-run homer sealed the win. Junior relief pitcher Jordan Zivoder (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) pitched two scoreless innings and allowed only one hit to record his second win of the season.
Freshman left fielder Scott Brady (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) had two hits and scored one run, while Trettel notched a pair of hits and scored three times.

NO. 21 W&J CLINCHES HOSTING RIGHTS FOR 2010 PAC TOURNAMENT ON HISTORIC DAY AT ROSS MEMORIAL PARK (5/7)
WASHINGTON, Pa - The 21st-ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team clinched home field advantage for the 2010 Presidents' Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday afternoon after winning a wild 22-18 contest against Waynesburg University at Ross Memorial Park. The Presidents (28-8, 14-2) set the school record for home runs in a game after blasting eight round trippers.

The Yellow Jackets (15-20, 6-10 PAC) opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning. Senior Wes White Jr. led off the inning with a single to center, stole second and came around to score on a single to center off the bat of sophomore Corey Goeggelman.
The Yelllow Jackets extended their lead to 3-0 in the top of the first inning as White drove in a run on sacrifice fly to left field and junior Rob Cool Jr. drew a bases loaded walk.
The Presidents got on the board in the bottom of the second inning on a RBI double to right center field off the bat of senior designated hitter Tyler Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville).
Pasquine made the score 4-3 in the third after he smacked a two-run homer over the right field wall, while Pascarella extended the lead to 5-3 after belting a homer to right field.
The Yellow Jackets responded and exploded for nine runs on nine hits to reclaim the lead 12-5 in the top of the fourth. Eight of the nine hitters in the Waynesburg's lineup tallied at least one hit and scored once.
The Presidents' bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth with three homers to trim the Yellow Jackets lead to one (12-11). Pasquine hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot to center, while Thomchick followed with a solo blast to right center. Pascarella capped off the six-run inning with a two-run homer down the right field line. Pascarella's 11th homer of the season now ties him with Thomchick for the single season home run record at W&J. Thomchick blasted 11 homers last season.
The Presidents added five runs on six hits in the bottom of the frame to take a 16-12 lead. Senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) opened the fifth with a solo home run, while Pasquine and Quirin each blasted two-run bombs.
The Yellow Jackets again went scoreless in the sixth and W&J appeared to put the game away after scoring four runs on three hits in the bottom of the sixth to take a 20-12 lead into the seventh inning; however, Waynesburg used one last push and plated six runs on five hits in the top of the seventh to trim the Presidents' lead to just two (20-18).
The Presidents' offense responded with a pair insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Pasquine put an exclamation point on his afternoon with a two-run double to right center.
Kennedy, who started the game at third base, came in as a relief pitcher in the seventh inning and recorded the final eight outs of the game to earn his team-leading third save. Senior left-hander Tom Dodd (Union City, Pa./Union City) improved to 3-0 on the mound for the Presidents as he pitched 2 2/3 strong innings during the middle of the contest. Dodd allowed three earned runs on four hits and set three Yellow Jacket batters down on strikes.
Ben Oviatt, who was this week's PAC Pitcher of the Week, suffered the loss for the Yellow Jackets after surrendering five earned runs on five hits in one inning of work.
Five Waynesburg players collected three or more hits, including White who led the squad, going 5-for-6 with one home run, five RBI and three runs scored.

TWO PRESIDENTS EARN BASEBALL ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS (5/6)
WASHINGTON, Pa. – Washington & Jefferson College juniors right-handed pitcher Pat Kennedy (Westerville, Ohio/South) {left} and center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) {right} were named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District II baseball teams on Thursday morning. Kennedy garnered first-team recognition and will now be placed on the national Academic All-American ballot, while Trettel landed on the second team.
Kennedy, a chemistry major, holds down a 3.94 grade-point average and is one of the Presidents’ top options on the mound. In 2010, he holds a perfect 7-0 record in 10 appearances, including nine starts. He has tossed 47 2/3 innings and has allowed 21 earned runs for a 3.97 earned run average. He leads the team in complete games (2) and is third on the W&J pitching staff with 26 strikeouts.
Trettel, the Presidents’ starting center fielder for the past two years, has helped W&J notch the nation’s sixth-best team batting average by holding a .378 average with 16 extra-base hits, including seven doubles, six homers and three triples. He has knocked in 43 runs and is 7-for-10 in stolen base attempts. Trettel has accumulated a 3.75 grade point average as an accounting major.
Trettel gained national recognition earlier this season after amassing a 55-game, on-base streak, which began on April 5, 2009. His streak (April 5, 2009 – April 19, 2010) ranks second in the NCAA Division III history, trailing only the 60-game streak of Salve Regina’s Damian Costantino (Apr. 4, 2001 - Mar. 10, 2003).
The District II region includes all NCAA Division II, Division III and NAIA colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

NO. 21 W&J FALLS 5-2 AGAINST FROSTBURG STATE IN MARYLAND (5/4)
FROSTBURG, Md. -- Matt Ridenour allowed just one earned run and recorded seven strikeouts in six innings of work to help Frostburg State defeat No. 21 Washington & Jefferson College by a score of 5-2 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Bob Wells Field.
The Presidents (27-8), ranked No. 1 in the NCAA Mideast Region, jumped ahead early in the game as they tallied single runs in the top of the first and third innings to hold a 2-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the third.

Frostburg State scored the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a RBI single off the bat of Joe Garrity. FSU added insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings and held the Presidents' offense in check over the final six innings.
Pasquine led the Presidents’ offense with two hits and two RBI, while Bogdewiecz scored both runs. Seven different Bobcat players recorded a hit in the game, including Greene's two hits, two RBI and one run.

NO. 21 W&J AND GROVE CITY SPLIT ON SENIOR DAY AT ROSS MEMORIAL PARK (5/1)
WASHINGTON, Pa. – The 21st-ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team collected a doubleheader split against Grove City College on Saturday afternoon in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action at Ross Memorial Park. The Presidents (27-7, 13-2 PAC) picked up a 17-8 victory in game one, before falling to the Wolverines (16-16, 9-6 PAC) by a score of 11-8 in the nightcap.
Prior to the start of game one, eighth-year Head Coach Jeff Mountain honored the careers of W&J’s 13 seniors {pictured above}. The class of 2010 has combined to win 117 games and two PAC Championships. The class can also set the school record for career victories with eight more wins this season.
Seniors Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) and Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Indiana), who both smacked a home run during the afternoon, hold the school record with 20 career home runs. Quirin bolstered the Presidents' lineup on the afternoon as he went 3-for-5 at the plate with five RBI and three runs scored, while Thomchick finished the day with three hits, four RBI and four runs scored.
Grove City captured the lead early in game one after scoring two runs in the first and one more in the second to lead 3-0 after one and a half innings of play; however, the Presidents responded with a four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-3 lead.
Thomchick and Quirin led off the inning with back-to-back homers, while senior second baseman Dave Dimperio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) drove in a run on a single to centerfield. Junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) also tallied a RBI in the second on a sacrifice fly to center.

W&J extended the lead to 17-6 after plating three runs in the fifth and one in the sixth. Pascarella opened the scoring in the fifth with a sacrifice fly to right field, while Kennedy drove home two runs on a single to center.

Game two featured a back-and-fourth affair that eventually led to an 11-8 Grove City triumph. The Wolverines jumped ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but W&J answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to claim the 2-1 edge.
After Grove City tied the game 2-2 in the top of the second, W&J added single runs in the second, third and fourth innings to take a 5-3 advantage into the fifth inning. Sophomore second baseman Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius) knocked in a run in the second on a run-scoring groundout, while Quirin delivered a sacrifice fly in the third.
The Wolverines tied the game 5-5 in the top of the fifth and exploded for five runs on five hits in the sixth inning to claim a 10-6 lead heading into the seventh inning.
GCC tacked on an insurance run in the top of the seventh and was able to survive a late push from the Presidents' offense in the bottom of the seventh inning to capture the three-run victory. The first four batters reached base for the Presidents in the bottom of the seventh inning, but GCC was able to preserve the win after a pair of sharp line outs by Quirin and senior third baseman Eric Chimenti (Moon Twp., Pa./OLSH) ended the game.
Thomchick tallied a run-scoring single in the seventh, while Bogdewiecz led off the inning with a triple to right center and came around to score on a throwing error by the GCC second baseman.
Junior right-hander Jordan Zivoder (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) suffered the loss in game two after allowing three earned runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning. PRESIDENTS POUND OUT 20 HITS IN 19-6 ROUT OF GROVE CITY (4/30)
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) {left} went 4-for-5 at the plate and hit his 19th career home run to help Washington & Jefferson cruise to a 19-6 PAC baseball victory over Grove City on Friday afternoon at College Field.
Thomchick collected three singles and clubbed a two-run homer to lead the Presidents (26-6, 11-2 PAC) with five runs batted in. Senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) added two hits, including the 200th of his career, and three RBI. Pasquine also scored three times.
W&J broke open a scoreless tie with six runs in the top of the third inning. Thomchick singled home a pair of runs, while senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) followed with a two-run single.
Quirin tacked on a two-run homer, the 19th of his career, in the fifth and W&J put the game away with four runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth. Pasquine tripled home a pair of runs in the fifth.
Seven different Presidents recorded multi-hit games. Quirin collected four runs batted in, while junior center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) had three hits, scored three times and knocked in two others. Junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Hoban) finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored, while sophomore second baseman Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius) had two hits and scored three runs.
Senior Andrew Bales (Chardon, Ohio/NDCL) turned in six strong innings on the mound to improve to 2-1. He allowed three earned runs (one earned) on five hits, while striking out two Wolverines.
Erick Locker suffered the loss for Grove City (15-15, 8-5 PAC) after allowing six runs on six hits in two innings. Seven different Wolverine pitchers saw action in the loss.
WASHINGTON, Pa. — The NCAA Division III Baseball Committee released the first Mideast Region Poll on Thursday and Washington & Jefferson College is the region’s top-ranked squad.
The Presidents (25-6, 11-1 PAC), ranked 21st nationally by D3baseball.com, earned the No. 1 ranking after accumulating a 22-3 record against in-region opponents through their first 31 games.
Ohio Athletic Conference leader Heidelberg (30-6) is second in the regional rankings, followed by John Carroll (21-12), 2009 national runner-up Wooster (31-7), four-time national champion Marietta (25-9), Adrian (23-9) and Franklin (21-10).
The 2010 NCAA Mideast Regional Tournament is scheduled to take place at Marietta College in Ohio on May 19-23.
The 2010 baseball squad is only the third team in any sport at W&J to reach the top spot in a NCAA regional poll. The 2002-03 W&J women’s basketball team sat atop the Great Lakes Region, while W&J football earned the top spot in the South Region most recently in 2007.
The No. 1 regional ranking comes after a year in which W&J made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament. Washington & Jefferson Head Coach Jeff Mountain is the catalyst for the Presidents' success as he boasts a 208-120-1 record (.634) in his eighth season. In the four seasons prior to Mountain's arrival in 2003, W&J had won a total of 21 games, including a 5-28 mark in 2002.
Four of W&J’s six losses have come against top 25 opponents, including a pair of losses against No. 2 UW-Whitewater, followed by setbacks against No. 11 Marietta and No. 19 Wisconsin-Stevens Point. UW-Whitewater (27-4) is the No. 1 team in the Midwest Regional rankings, while UW-Stevens Point (22-9) is fourth in the Midwest.
In their most recent game, the Presidents collected an 8-6 come-from-behind victory against conference-rival Thomas More. Junior center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth inning as he blasted a two-run homer over the right field fence to give W&J the two-run victory.

LATE INNING HOMERS LIFT NO. 21 W&J OVER THOMAS MORE 8-6 (4/28)
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — Junior center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) {right} broke a 6-6 tie in the top of the ninth inning with a two-run home run over the center field fence to give the 21st-ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team an 8-6 victory over Thomas More in a key Presidents’ Athletic Conference game on Wednesday afternoon.
The Presidents (25-6, 11-1 PAC) gained the upper hand in the PAC baseball standings as they hold a two-game lead and the tie-breaker over the Saints (22-12, 9-3 PAC) with six conference games remaining. The regular-season champion hosts the conference tournament (May 13-15). W&J has hosted four of the last five PAC Baseball Tournaments.
W&J trailed 6-3 in the top of the eighth inning; however, senior right fielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) cracked his team-leading ninth home run of the season, a two-out, three-run shot over the right field wall, to tie the score 6-6. Seniors Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) and Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) set the table for Pascarella’s round tripper after connecting on back-to-back, two-out hits to keep the inning alive.
Thomas More opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Marty Kersting connected on a run-scoring single to put the Saints up 1-0.
W&J responded and tacked on two runs on two hits in the top of the second inning to grab a 2-1 advantage. Senior designated hitter Tyler Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) gave the Presidents the lead with a two-run double to right center.
The Saints evened the score in the bottom of the second inning as Nick Zeiser drove in a run on a single to center field.
Junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) opened the third inning with a double to left field and came around to score, putting W&J back on top 3-2, after a run-scoring groundout from Trettel.
TMC again answered and scored an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning and then jumped ahead 6-3 in the bottom of the sixth inning after scoring three runs on five hits. David Kennett, Chris Fishburn and Kersting all delivered run-scoring singles in the sixth.
Junior right-hander Pat Kennedy (Westerville, Ohio/South) improved to 7-0 on the mound for the Red & Black after shutting down the Saints over the final two innings. Sophomore right-hander Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) started the game on the mound and earned a no-decision after allowing four earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings of work. Michael Murray suffered the loss for the Saints, surrendering two earned runs on three hits in 1 1/3 innings.
Pascarella went 2-for-4, scored two runs and added three RBI, while Kaido finished with two hits and two RBI. Bogdewiecz also tallied two hits and scored twice, while Trettel drove in three runs.
Fishburn led the Saints’ offense with a 4-for-5 day at the plate. He knocked in two runs and scored once.

PRESIDENTS’ OFFENSE CONTINUES TO FLOURISH NATIONALLY (4/28)
WASHINGTON, Pa. — The 21st-ranked Washington & Jefferson College baseball team continues to boast one of the top offensive units in the NCAA Division III. The Presidents hold a 24-6 overall record and lead the Presidents’ Athletic Conference with a mark of 10-1 in league play. W&J’s .800 winning percentage is 14th in the nation.
W&J ranks among the top 20 teams in five offensive statistical categories, including sixth in slugging percentage (.567), eighth in batting average (.370), 12th in scoring (10.3 rpg), 17th in sacrifice flies (26) and 19th in home runs per game (1.07).
In addition, junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) ranks in the top 20 in three categories, including fourth in runs per game (1.70), 15th in runs scored (51) and 20th in on-base percentage (.552), while senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) {pictured} is 20th in the nation in RBI per game (1.50).
Nine of W&J’s everyday players are currently hitting at or above the .325 mark, including four starters who are hitting well above .400, including senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) (.459), Bogdewiecz (.444), Quirin (.426) and senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) (.425).
The Presidents’ have also produced solid power numbers with a team slugging percentage of .567 (73 doubles, 32 home runs and 15 triples). W&J has scored 309 runs (10.3 rpg) and tallied 278 RBI.
WASHINGTON, Pa. — The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team has moved into the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll for the first time this season. The Presidents (25-6, 11-1 PAC) are currently ranked 21st in the website’s national poll.
Johns Hopkins (34-5), which eliminated W&J from the 2009 NCAA South Regional Tournament, currently holds down the No. 1 spot in the nation, while Wisconsin-Whitewater (26-3), Wooster (31-7), Heidelberg (26-6) and St. Thomas (21-5) round out the top five in the country.
The Presidents entered the poll after posting a 5-1 record last week, including victories against La Roche (18-5), Thomas More (5-4) and a three-game series sweep over Saint Vincent (15-2; 10-3; 11-8).
The Red & Black have been bolstered by a high-powered offense all season. The Presidents are hitting .370 as a team with all nine every day players hitting at or above .325. W&J has already scored 309 runs (10.3 rpg) and has tallied 278 RBI, 73 doubles, 32 home runs and 15 triples in its first 30 games.

W&J SWEEPS PAC BASEBALL WEEKLY AWARDS (4/26)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Archbishop Hoban) {left} and sophomore right-handed pitcher Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) {right} were selected Monday as the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Baseball Players of the Week
Bogdewiecz earned the hitting honor after posting a .444 batting average (8-for-18) last week, while Trushel made two scoreless relief appearances on the mound to notch the pitching award.
Bogdewiecz helped W&J post a 5-1 record during the week with two doubles, one triple, two homers and six runs batted in. He also scored 11 times and stole three bases. For the week, he garnered a .615 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage.
Trushel pitched the final three innings of a 5-4 victory over Thomas More in the second game of a doubleheader Monday. He allowed only two hits and struck out five Saints to earn the win. He then tossed two innings and allowed one hit Sunday during the Presidents’ 11-8 win at Saint Vincent.
Trushel has posted a 5-1 record this spring with a 3.76 ERA. He has pitched 38 1/3 innings and is tied for second on the team with 22 strikeouts.
Bogdewiecz, the leadoff hitter in a W&J lineup which averages 10.3 runs per game, is batting .441 overall. He leads the team with 51 runs and is tied for the team lead in stolen bases (15). Bogdewiecz is second on the team with 19 extra-base hits: 11 doubles, five triples, three homers.

W&J EDGES SAINT VINCENT, 11-8, IN WEATHER SHORTENED GAME (4/25)
LATROBE, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team trailed Saint Vincent 8-6 after seven innings of play, but rallied to score five runs in the top of the eighth inning to capture an 11-8 weather-shortened victory on Sunday afternoon at Bearcat Field. The victory will not count towards the Presidents' PAC record due to SVC serving its final year of provisional status in both the conference and the NCAA Division III.
The game was delayed twice due to inclement weather and was eventually called after the eighth inning because of lightning in the Greater Latrobe area.
W&J (24-6) trailing 8-6 after seven innings, but junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) tied the game in the top of the eighth inning after smacking a two-run home run over the left field wall.
The Presidents regained the lead (9-8) on a sacrifice fly to right field off the bat of senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) {pictured} and went ahead by three after senior right fielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) reached safely on an error and two runs scored.
The Presidents jumped ahead early, scoring single runs in the second and third innings. Quirin brought home an unearned run in the second, while senior left fielder Jim Pasquine's (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) sacrifice fly in the third scored a run.
The Bearcats (15-16) cut into the lead in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore Zack Galasso blasted a solo homer to left center to make the score 2-1.
The Red & Black regained a two-run advantage (3-1) in the top of the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of sophomore second baseman Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius).
Saint Vincent again drew within one (3-2) in the bottom of the fourth as sophomore Dan Jackson delivered a run-scoring single to right field.
Quirin put the Presidents ahead 4-2 in the top of the fifth inning on a RBI triple to right center, while Pascarella followed with a run-scoring double to left field. Junior center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) put the Presidents on top 6-2 after tallying a RBI on a fielder's choice in the top of the sixth.
Saint Vincent's offense came alive in the bottom of the seventh inning as they jumped ahead of the Presidents 8-6 after scoring six runs on four hits and one Presidents' error. Senior Adam Miller highlighted the Bearcats six-run outburst with a grand slam homer over the left field fence.
Pascarella, Pasquine, Quirin, Trettel and senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) each finished the game with two hits, while Bogdewiecz and Quirin both tallied two RBI. Quirin also led the Presidents with three runs scored.
Senior right-hander Erik Fargo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) earned the victory for the Presidents and improved to 3-1 on the year. Fargo tossed the final 1 1/3 innings and an unearned run on two hits.

OFFENSE PROPELS W&J PAST SAINT VINCENT IN DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP (4/24)
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team pounded out 28 hits, including seven home runs, on Saturday afternoon during a doubleheader sweep (15-2; 10-3) of Saint Vincent in Presidents' Athletic Conference action at Ross Memorial Park. SVC's Zach Galasso tied the game with a two-run home run in the top of the third inning, but the Presidents regained the lead for good in the bottom of the third after scoring three runs on four hits.
Pasquine opened the third with a run-scoring double to right center, while senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) smacked a two-run home run to put W&J ahead 5-2.
The Presidents increased their lead to six (8-2) with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the fourth inning and put the game out of reach after plating seven runs on six hits and one Bearcat error in the bottom of the fifth.
Bogdewiecz tallied a RBI on a triple to right center in the fourth, while junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) followed with a solo blast to center. Sophomore second baseman Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius) {top right} highlighted W&J's seven-run fifth as he hit his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot over the left field wall, to put W&J up 10-2. Senior right fielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) also added a three-run homer in the fifth, while Trettel tallied a RBI double to right center.
Pasquine earned the game one victory after allowing two earned runs on four hits in four innings of work. Junior right-hander Jordan Zivoder (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) threw two scoreless innings out of the pen, while sophomore left-hander Zach Margules (Coconut Creek, Fla./N. Broward Prep) tallied the final three outs of the game.
The Bearcats (15-15) jumped ahead early in game two as junior Joe Aul laced an inside-the-park home run to right center in the top of the first; however, Bogdewiecz answered with his inside-the-park homer in the bottom of the first to tie the game after one inning of play.
The Red & Black secured the lead for good in the bottom of the second inning as they went ahead 5-1 after scoring four runs on three hits. Senior third baseman Eric Chimenti (Moon Twp., Pa./OLSH) led off the inning with a solo home run to left center, while senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) delivered a two-out, two-run triple to right center.
After a scoreless third inning, W&J put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits. Quirin, Trettel and senior designated hitter Tyler Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) each tallied a RBI for the Presidents in the fourth.

Senior right-hander Mitch McClay (Washington, Pa./Trinity) tossed his first complete game of the season for the Presidents. In seven innings of work, McClay allowed three earned runs on eight hits. He also accumulated six strikeouts and walked just one batter.
Pasquine finished the afternoon with four hits, four RBI and three runs scored, while Trettel totaled three hits, four runs and three RBI. Quirin also contributed three hits, three RBI and two runs on the day. Chimenti and Klinec each finished the day with two hits.

PRESIDENTS ROLL PAST LA ROCHE BEHIND FOUR HITS FROM KAIDO (4/22)
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -Washington & Jefferson College senior designated hitter Tyler Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) {left} went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead 10 different Presidents with at least one base hit Thursday as the Presidents cruised to an 18-5 baseball victory at La Roche College.
The Presidents (21-6) sent 16 batters to the plate in the top of the first inning and stormed ahead of the Redhawks (16-14) by plating 11 runs on five hits and one LaRoche error. The Red & Black were assisted by six walks and one hit batsmen.
Kaido highlighted the Presidents' 11-run first inning outburst with two doubles and three RBI. Seniors Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) also added back-to-back run-scoring singles in the first.
The Redhawks responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning, but W&J extended the lead back to 12-2 in the top of the third inning on Quirin's solo homer to left field.
The Presidents tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 14-2. Senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) collected a RBI with a single to center field. W&J plated single runs in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth during.
Junior pitcher Pat Kennedy (Westerville, Ohio/South) improved to 6-0 after limiting the Redhawks to three runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings. He struck out five and issued one walk.
A total of 22 different Presidents saw action during the win. Quirin finished a triple shy of the cycle, scored three runs and knocked in three more. Junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Hoban) scored two runs and drove in two others, while junior center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) scored three times. PRESIDENTS AND SAINTS SPLIT PAC DOUBLEHEADER (4/20)
WASHINGTON, Pa – Senior designated hitter Eric Chimenti (Moon Twp., Pa./OLSH) {pictured} was hit by a pitch with the bases-loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team secure a doubleheader split against Thomas More in Presidents’ Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park. TMC collected a 6-2 triumph in game one, but Chimenti helped W&J earn a 5-4 win in the nightcap.
The Presidents (20-6, 10-1 PAC) saw their school-record, 12-game win streak and their 20-game, regular-season home win streak come to an end in game one. In addition, junior center fielder Andy Trettel’s (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) on-base streak, the second-longest in NCAA Division III history, came to an end at 55 games.
The Saints (18-11, 6-2 PAC) got on the board first in game one as Chris Fishburn smacked a three-run home run over the left field wall in the top of the third inning.
W&J threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth inning with runners on first and second with no one out; however, senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) lined into an inning-ending triple play to end the Presidents’ rally.
TMC kept the pressure on and extended its lead to 6-0 in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs on four hits and one Presidents ' error. W&J got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh as senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) smacked a two-out, two-run homer over the left field fence, but it wasn’t enough as Grant Lewis nailed down the final out to secure the complete game performance.
Senior right-hander Andrew Bales (Chardon, Ohio/NDCL) suffered the loss on the mound for the Presidents after allowing six earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work, while Lewis improved to 3-1 on the year for the Saints.
W&J gained the early edge in game two as senior right fielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) connected on his team-leading seventh home run of the season in the bottom of the third inning, a three-run shot to put the Presidents ahead 3-0.
The Saints fought back and jumped in front 4-3 in the top of the fourth inning after collecting four runs on three hits. TMC sent all nine batters to the plate in the frame.
W&J answered and evened the score 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a run-scoring single to center field from senior second baseman Dave Dimperio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) that brought senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) around to score from second base.
Sophomore right-hander Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park), who entered the game in the fifth inning, shut down the Saints in the top of the seventh to help set up the last at-bat heroics.
Pasquine reached first in the bottom of the seventh after drawing a walk, while senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) snuck a check-swing single through the left side to put W&J runners on first and second with one out.
Quirin advanced Pasquine to third on a deep fly out to left center field, while Pascarella was intentionally walked, setting up Chimenti’s final at-bat.
Trushel collected his fifth win of the season after slamming the door shut on the Saints offense over the final three innings. He scattered just two hits and set five batters down on strikes.
Dimperio, Kennedy and Thomchick all finished the day with three hits for the Presidents. Pascarella paced the Presidents with three RBI, while Quirin also added two hits and two RBI.

ANDY TRETTEL ON-BASE STREAK ENDS AS SECOND BEST IN DIII HISTORY (4/20)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College junior center fielder Andy Trettel's (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) 55-game on-base streak came to an end on Tuesday after he went 0-for-3 at the plate against Thomas More.
Trettel’s 55-game streak ranks as the second-longest in NCAA Division III history.
Salve Regina’s Damian Costantino retains the longest streak in history at 60 games (Apr. 4, 2001 - Mar. 10, 2003).
During the streak, Trettel batted .351 (67-of-191) with eight home runs and 53 runs batted in. He scored 62 runs during the 55 games and collected 11 stolen bases, 10 doubles and three triples.
Trettel’s streak started on April 5, 2009, when he went 2-for-4 in the first game of a doubleheader at Westminster. He kept the streak active by recording at least one base hit 43 times. During the games he was held hitless, the streak remained active because Trettel either drew a walk (nine times) or was hit by a pitch (three times).

McCLAY EARNS WEEKLY PAC PITCHING AWARD (4/20)
WASHINGTON, Pa. — Washington & Jefferson College senior right-hander Mitch McClay (Washington, Pa./Trinity) was named the Presidents’ Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week Monday by the conference office.
McClay earned the award after allowing one unearned run in seven innings of work during W&J’s 11-1 triumph over Thiel on Sunday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park. He limited the Tomcats to just six hits and set down two batters on strikes.
On the season, McClay has started four games and holds a 2-1 record. In 28 1/3 innings pitched, he has allowed 18 earned runs for an ERA of 5.72. McClay leads the Presidents with 20 strikeouts, averaging 2.9 punch outs per outing.
In 42 career appearances, he has tossed 120 2/3 innings and allowed 74 earned runs for a career ERA of 5.52. The 6-foot-1 right-hander holds a four-year record of 8-4 with three saves. He has also tallied 93 strikeouts.

McCLAY LIFTS W&J TO 11-1 VICTORY OVER THIEL (4/18)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior right-handed pitcher Mitch McClay (Washington, Pa./Trinity) {left} allowed one unearned run on six hits in seven innings of work to help Washington & Jefferson College complete its third-straight Presidents’ Athletic Conference series sweep as the Presidents defeated Thiel by a score of 11-1 on Sunday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.
With the victory, the Presidents (19-5, 9-0 PAC) extended their school-record win streak to 12 games. In addition, W&J also upped its regular-season home win streak to 20.
Junior center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) kept his on-base streak alive after drawing a walk in the bottom of the seventh inning. Trettel’s streak now stands at 55 games, which is just five games shy of tying the NCAA Division III record held by Salve Regina’s Damian Costantino.
Three W&J runs in the bottom of the first inning started things in the right direction for the Presidents as they continued to pile runs on in innings three, four, five, six and eight, while only allowing one Tomcat run in the top of the second inning.

The Presidents struck for single runs in both the third and fourth innings to add to their lead as Pasquine, who led off the third inning with a single up the middle, scampered home on a wild pitch, while Bogdewiecz roped a run-scoring single in the fourth.
Thomchick added to W&J’s lead with his third home run of the season in the fifth, while Kennedy followed with a RBI single to left field to put the Red & Black up 7-1 after five innings of play.
Quirin picked up his second RBI of the game in the sixth inning and W&J added three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Kennedy drove in a pair of runs in the eighth on a single to center, while senior pinch hitter Dave Dimperio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) brought Kennedy around to score on a single to left field.
Kennedy (3 RBI) and Quirin (2 RBI) combined to knock in five runs, while Pasquine scored three times.
GREENVILLE, Pa. - Eighth-year Head Coach Jeff Mountain {pictured} collected his 200th career win in game one of Washington & Jefferson College's doubleheader sweep of Thiel College (11-4; 10-3) in Presidents' Athletic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at Tomcat Park. Mountain's career record now stands at 201-119-1 (.626), including a 174-76-1 (.693) since 2005.
In addition, the Presidents broke the school record for consecutive wins after posting their 11th-straight victory with their seven-run triumph in game two. The 1903 and 1905 squads held the previous record with 10-straight wins during their respective seasons.
After collecting a hit in both games of the doubleheader, junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) {right} has now reached base safely in 54 consecutive games. Trettel is five games shy of tying Salve Regina's Domian Constantino for the longest streak in NCAA Division III history.
The Presidents (18-5, 8-0 PAC) wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as they went ahead 1-0 in the top of the first inning of game one on a RBI single from senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary)
Thiel (11-16, 4-10 PAC) evened the score in the bottom of the first inning and grabbed a 3-1 lead after plating two runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning.
W&J responded and regained the lead for good, 5-3, in the top of the third inning after scoring four runs on three hits and two Tomcat errors. Pasquine roped his second run-scoring single of the day to bring home the Presidents' first run, while senior designated hitter Dave Dimperio (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) also drove in a run on a triple to right-center. Sophomore right fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) scored Dimperio from third base on a sacrifice fly to left field.
After a Brock Porter home run narrowed the lead to 5-4 in the bottom of the third inning, Pasquine answered with a solo shot in the top of the fourth to regain the Red & Black's two-run cushion, 6-4.
The Presidents put the game away in the top of the fifth inning, erupting for five runs on four hits. Bogdewiecz highlighted the five-run fifth inning with a three-run triple, while Pasquine tallied his fourth RBI of the game with a single up the middle. Szabo also posted a RBI in the fifth after reaching safely on an error.
Sophomore right-hander Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) improved to 4-1 on the hill for the Presidents after tossing five innings and allowing three earned runs on nine hits.
Pasquine finished game one 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored, while Bogdewiecz added two hits, two runs scored and three RBI. Dimperio also tallied three hits, two runs scored and one RBI, while Szabo finished the game with two RBI.
W&J's bats stayed hot in game two, striking for five runs on five hits in the top of the first inning. Quirin sparked the five-run outburst with a two-run double to left field, while seniors Eric Chimenti (Moon Twp., Pa./OLSH), Tyler Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) and Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) each added run-scoring hits.
The Tomcats manufactured a run in the bottom of the first, but W&J extended its lead to 8-1 after tallying three runs on four hits in the second inning. Trettel drove in the first run of the inning on a single, while Pasquine followed with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Presidents added two insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning on back-to-back, run-scoring doubles from Thomchick and Quirin. Thiel plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough and W&J completed the doubleheader sweep.
Quirin finished game two with three hits, three RBI and one run, while Thomchick and Trettel each added two hits and two runs scored. Thomchick also collected three RBI.
Junior Pat Kennedy (Westerville, Ohio/South) picked up his team-leading fifth win of the season on the mound in game two. The 6-foot-1 right-hander tossed his second complete game of the season, allowing one earned run on nine hits, while striking out two.

W&J EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO NINE WITH 7-4 VICTORY OVER LA ROCHE (4/14)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) {pictured} went 2-for-4 at the plate, scored twice and added three RBI to lift the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team to a 7-4 victory over La Roche on Wednesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.
The Presidents (16-5) tied the 2005 and 2006 squads for the second-longest winning streak in school history with nine victories in a row. The 1903 and 1905 teams own the school record for consecutive wins after each team reeled off 10 straight victories.
In addition, the win also extended W&J’s regular-season home win streak to 19. The streak began on April 11, 2009, with a 7-2 victory over Thiel.
The Redhawks (12-9) opened the scoring by plating one run in the top of the first inning, but W&J answered and gained a 2-1 advantage after Thomchick smacked his second home run of the season over the right field fence in the bottom of the frame.
After a scoreless second inning, La Roche jumped ahead in the top of the third inning (3-2) after scoring two runs on two hits and one President error. The Red & Black responded and collected the lead for good (5-3) in the bottom of the third inning after scoring three runs on four hits.
Thomchick produced a RBI double in the third, while senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) also drove in a run on a sharp single to centerfield.
W&J extended its lead to 6-3 in the bottom of the fourth after senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Redhawks added another run in the top of the fifth inning, but W&J was able to post an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a run-scoring triple off the bat of junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny). Trettel increased his consecutive on-base streak, the second-longest in NCAA Division III history, to 52 games.
Senior pitcher Erik Fargo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) improved to 2-1 on the year after allowing two earned runs in three innings of work. Senior right-hander Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning and recorded the final two outs to earn his team-leading second save of the season.
Quirin and Trettel each finished with two hits and one RBI, while junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) added a base hit and scored two runs.

QUIRIN KNOCKS HOME GAME-WINNER IN WILD 12-INNING AFFAIR AGAINST WESTMINSTER; W&J SWEEPS SEASON SERIES (4/11)
WASHINGTON, Pa. - Senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) {pictured} roped a single to left field to lift Washington & Jefferson College to a 7-6 victory over Westminster in a wild 12-inning affair in game two of Sunday's Presidents' Athletic Conference doubleheader at Ross Memorial Park. The Presidents also posted a run in every inning of game one en route to earning a 19-15 come-from-behind victory.
The Presidents (15-5, 6-0 PAC) and Titans (7-15, 4-7) combined for 70 hits and 47 runs in a pair of games that totaled six hours and 31 minutes in length.
Junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) also reached base in both games to extend his on-base streak to 51 games. Trettel now owns the second-best consecutive on-base streak in NCAA Division III history and is eight games away from tying the national record.
W&J stormed in front in game one and led 10-4 after three innings of play. After Westminster plated two runs in the top of the first inning, senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) and Quirin tied the game on a pair of run-scoring singles.
Westminster kept the pressure and re-took the lead (4-2) with two runs in the second, but the Presidents responded with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the second to reclaim the 7-4 advantage. Junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly to right field, while Pasquine, senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) and Quirin all drive in a run.
The Titans went scoreless in the top of the third and the Presidents appeared to pull away (10-4) after scoring three runs on three hits. Trettel highlighted the three-run third inning with a two-run home run over the right field wall.
Both teams added one run in the fourth inning to make the score 11-5, but the Titans exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 12-11 lead. W&J responded and re-took the lead (15-12) after tallying four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth.
Trettel tied the game with a sacrifice fly to center field, while Quirin put the Presidents ahead with a run-scoring single through the right side. Freshman right fielder Scott Brady (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) drove in the final two runs of the inning on a double down the left field line.
The Titans drew to within two (15-13) in the sixth, but the Red & Black put the game away after four runs in the bottom half. Senior outfielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) broke the game open with a three-run double, while senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) added a RBI single.
Brady and Pasquine both collected three hits in game one, while Bogdewiecz, Kennedy, Pascarella, Quirin and Trettel each added two-hit performances.
Senior right-hander Andrew Bales (Chardon, Ohio/NDCL) picked up his first win of the season after allowing two earned runs on five hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.
The Presidents kept the bats rolling in the first inning of game two as Pasquine put W&J on top 2-0 with a two-run double to right center. Pasquine came around to score on a double play ball off the bat of Quirin to give W&J a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
The Titans clawed back into the game, scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings to narrow the deficit to one (3-2). Bogdewiecz cracked a leadoff home run in the fifth inning to put W&J back ahead by two (4-2), but the Titans jumped in front 6-4 after tacking on four runs on two hits in the top of the sixth inning.
W&J opened its comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning on senior second baseman Dave Dimperio's (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park) RBI single and sent the game into extra innings after Pascarella drove in the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly right field.
Both teams threatened to break the tie with numerous scoring opportunities in the extra frames, but W&J was finally able to escape with the one-run victory on Quirin's bases-loaded single to right center.
Pasquine and Quirin collected three hits in game two, while Bogdewiecz, senior designated hitter Tyler Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville), sophomore outfielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) and Trettel all tallied two hits a piece. Pasquine also picked up two RBI, while Bogdewecz and Trettel both scored two runs.
Junior right-hander Jordan Zivoder (Lyndhurst, Ohio/Brush) picked up the game two victory after holding the Titan scoreless over the final six innings. The 6-foot-1 right-hander also posted a career-high six strikeouts.

TRUSHEL SHUTS DOWN TITAN BATS; TRETTEL INCREASES ON-BASE STREAK (4/10)
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. - Sophomore pitcher Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) pitched eight strong innings to help Washington & Jefferson remain undefeated in Presidents' Athletic Conference play after defeating Westminster 5-2 on Saturday afternoon.
Trushel limited Westminster (7-13, 4-5 PAC) to two runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out five.
In addition, junior center fielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) picked up a sixth-inning infield single to up his on-base streak to 49 games. Trettel is now tied with Jose Fulgencio of New Jersey City (2007-2008) for the second-longest on-base streak in NCAA Division III history.
Westminster grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, but the Presidents (13-5, 4-0 PAC) tied the game in the third. Sophomore right fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory) singled and scored on senior left fielder Jim Pasquine's (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) sacrifice fly.

Pasquine went 3-for-3 at the plate, drove in two runs and stole two bases. Quirin also notched three hits. Seven different Presidents recorded a base hit (11 total hits), but W&J was held under 10 runs for only the second time in the past 10 games.

PRESIDENTS' BATS STAY HOT IN 10-4 VICTORY AT GENEVA (4/7)
BEAVER FALLS, Pa. – The Washington & Jefferson College baseball offense stayed hot Wednesday as it pounded out 15 hits en route to a 10-4 victory over Geneva College at 33rd Street Field. The victory does not count towards W&J’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference record due to Geneva’s provisional status in the NCAA Division III.
W&J has scored 10 or more runs in five-straight games and eight of its last nine. On the season, the Presidents are hitting .356 as a team and averaging 10.5 runs per game.

Geneva made one last effort to get back into the game on Jon Bushmire's two-run double, but senior right-hander Mitch McClay (Washington, Pa./Trinity) entered the game in the eighth and got the final four outs of the game to secure the six-run victory for W&J.
Fargo picked up his first victory of the season after allowing two earned runs on five hits in six innings of work. He also tallied three strikeouts.

The first two batters in the Presidents' lineup led the victory. Bethany (9-5, 1-4 PAC) tallied two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning, but W&J gained the lead with three runs in the top of the second inning. The Presidents (8-5, 1-0 PAC) have now won 12-straight games against the Bison (9-3, 1-2) dating back to the April 8, 2006.
Bethany jumped ahead early, scoring an unearned run in the top of the first inning, but W&J responded and tied the score in the bottom of the second inning on a sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of sophomore left fielder Brian Szabo (Hermitage, Pa./Hickory).
The Bison answered and tallied a run in the top of the third on Tyler Dillinger's sacrifice fly to make the score 2-1.
Following a scoreless third inning, Pascarella gave the Red & Black their first lead of the game 3-2 with a two-run double to right center in the bottom of the fourth inning.

NO. 8 MARIETTA EDGES W&J 10-7 IN OHIO (4/1)
MARIETTA, Ohio - Eighth-ranked Marietta College outscored Washington & Jefferson College by an 8-0 margin during the first three innings and held on to capture a 10-7 victory on Thursday evening at Don Schaly Stadium.
The Pioneers (16-3) struck first and scored four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first inning to an early advantage. Marietta tallied two runs a piece in the second and third innings and appeared to in take control of the game as it led 8-0 after three innings of play.
The Presidents (7-5) refused to go away and clawed back into the game, plating two runs in the fourth and four more in the fifth to narrow the deficit to 8-6.
Senior designated hitter Tyler Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) knocked home a pair of runs in the fourth inning on a two-out single to right field, while senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) sparked a four-run fifth with a three-run home run over the right field wall.

BIG INNINGS PROPEL W&J'S DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF GENEVA (3/30)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- The Washington & Jefferson College baseball team scored 20 if its 22 runs in three innings, including an 11-run outbreak in the fifth inning of game one, during a doubleheader sweep (12-1; 10-2) of Geneva College in Presidents’ Athletic Conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park.
The victories will not count toward W&J’s PAC record due to Geneva’s provisional status in the NCAA Division III.
Senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) {pictured} sparked the Presidents (7-4) offense on the afternoon, going 4-for-7 at the plate with six RBI, including a grand slam in the fifth inning of game one.
The Golden Tornadoes (8-9) jumped ahead early in the opening game with a run in the top of the first inning, but W&J responded as senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) drove in a run in the bottom of the frame on a fielder’s choice.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Dave Trushel (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and Geneva’s Mike Trn settled in over the next three and half innings and held both offenses silent, but W&J’s bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth to break the 1-1 tie.
Seniors Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) and Tyler Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) sparked the fifth inning rally with back-to-back hits. Junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) tallied the first RBI of the inning after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) roped a single up the middle to plate two more runs for the Red & Black. Senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) drew another bases loaded hit batsmen to make the score 5-1, while Quirin’s grand slam broke the game wide open one at-bat later.
Senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) added a two-run double to right center, while Bogdewiecz closed out the rally with a run-scoring single to center.
Trushel picked up the win and improved to 1-1 on the hill after allowing just one earned run in five innings of work. He surrendered two hits and set four batters down on strikes.
W&J struck early in game two, scoring four runs on four hits in the bottom of the second inning. Freshman catcher Craig Rebovich (Perryopolis, Pa./Frazier) made it a 1-0 game with the first hit and RBI of his career. The Presidents put the game away in the fourth inning as Trettel led off with his second home run of the season. Quirin followed with a RBI single to left field, while senior third baseman Eric Chimenti (Moon Twp., Pa./OLSH) added a two-run single to center.
Freshman outfielder Dustin Uhlman (Butler, Pa./Butler) added an insurance run for the Presidents in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly to center. The Golden Tornadoes added two runs in the seventh inning, but it wasn’t enough and W&J cruised to the eight-run victory.
Junior right-hander Pat Kennedy (Westerville, Ohio/South) picked up his team-leading third win of the season after tossing scoreless three innings. He allowed only one hit.
Trettel finished the afternoon with three hits and five RBI, while Bogdewiecz added two hits, three runs scored and two runs batted in. Merlina and Rebovich both added two hits a piece for W&J in game two.

W&J WRAPS UP FLORIDA TRIP WITH SWEEP OF PLYMOUTH STATE (3/26)
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- Junior pitcher Pat Kennedy (Westerville, Ohio/South) limited Plymouth State (Mass.) to three hits in a complete game performance during game one to highlight Washington & Jefferson’s baseball sweep on Friday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park. The Presidents won game one by an 8-1 margin and then scored in five different innings during the nightcap to record a 10-8 triumph.
Kennedy allowed just one unearned third-inning run to improve his season record to 2-0. He struck out three Panthers (0-10) and issued only one walk.
W&J (5-4) broke up a scoreless game in the top of the third with five runs. Senior designated hitter Tyler Kaido (Zanesville, Ohio/Zanesville) and junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded two-run singles, while sophomore second baseman Aaron Klinec (North Olmsted, Ohio/St. Ignatius) brought home a run with a sacrifice fly.
Junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Hoban) doubled and scored on a Trettel sacrifice fly in the fifth and the Presidents added two insurance runs in the sixth.

John Andersch suffered the loss for Plymouth State after allowing five runs on four hits in three innings. He struck out six Presidents, but issued five walks.
Washington & Jefferson plated single runs in the first and second frames to grab an early 2-0 advantage. Senior designated hitter Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) drew a two-out walk in the first and scored on senior first baseman Frank Quirin’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) triple. Junior catcher Marc Lubline (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush) singled and scored on a double steal attempt in the bottom of the second.
Senior third baseman/relief pitcher Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) singled home a run in the fourth and added a two-run single in the five-run fifth which put W&J in front 8-3. Trettel tacked on a RBI triple in the sixth and scored one batter late on Pasquine’s groundout. Kennedy came on to record the final three outs and withstood a late five-run rally by the Panthers.
Kennedy was 3-for-3 with three RBI in game two, while Quirin added three hits. Junior reliever Ian Gabos (Pittsburgh, Pa./Vincentian) earned his first career win in relief. He gave up two runs (one earned) without allowing a hit in 1 2/3 innings. Senior Erik Fargo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) started and threw 4 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs on five hits, while striking out four.

PRESIDENTS DROP 16-15 SLUGFEST AGAINST HOPE (3/25)
AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- All nine batters in the Hope College lineup recorded two or more hits and the Flying Dutch scored in every inning en route to picking up a wild 16-15 baseball victory over Washington & Jefferson College on Thursday morning at Lake Myrtle Park.
Scott Miller roped a two-out hit down the left field line in the bottom of the ninth inning to break a 15-15 tie and give HC the one-run victory.
The Presidents (3-4) and Flying Dutch (7-3) combined for 40 hits (HC - 22; W&J - 18), including thirteen extra-base hits in the nine-inning affair.
Hope rushed out to a 9-0 after four innings of play, but the W&J bats finally came alive in the top of the fifth inning with six runs on five hits.

Hope extended its lead to 10-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning, but the Presidents' bats stayed hot as W&J took an 11-10 edge after scoring five runs on five hits in the top of the sixth.

HC assumed a 12-11 advantage after seven frames, but W&J appeared to put the game away after scoring four runs on four hits in the top of the eighth to claim a 15-12 lead. Senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana) and Pasquine both produced run-scoring hits to put W&J ahead by three.
Hope again responded and tied the game, 15-15, after scoring three runs on four hits in the eighth inning, setting up Miller's last at-bat heroics.
Pasquine finished 4-for-5 at the plate with four RBI and two runs scored, while Pascarella added three extra-base hits (2 doubles and a HR), four RBI and two runs scored. Pasquine started on the mound but only lasted two innings after allowing three runs on five hits.
Senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby) also tallied three hits, while Quirin and Thomchick both finished the afternoon with two hits a piece.

NO. 18 WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER HANDS W&J THIRD LOSS OF THE SEASON (3/24)
AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Dan Putnam went 3-for-5 at the plate, including a three-run home run, to help lift No. 18 Wisconsin-Whitewater to a 12-4 victory over Washington & Jefferson College in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
The Presidents (3-3) jumped on top of the Warhawks (8-1) early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. Senior left fielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) drove in the first run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field, while senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) knocked in the second run with a run-scoring double to left field.
UWW responded and scored two runs in the bottom of the first and then took a 5-2 lead after scoring three unearned runs in the third frame. The Presidents were hurt by four costly errors in the third inning.

BROWN AND QUIRIN HELP W&J EARN SPLIT AGAINST NO. 15 UWSP (3/23)
AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Senior pitcher Tommy Brown (Wintersville, Ohio/Indian Creek) tossed 4 1/3 innings without allowing a hit and senior first baseman Frank Quirin (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) {pictured} blasted two home runs to help Washington & Jefferson earn a baseball doubleheader split with 15th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Tuesday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.
The Pointers (3-3) pounded out 17 hits in game one to record a 13-6 victory, but the Presidents (3-2) fought back to earn the split with an 8-1 triumph in the nightcap.
Brown allowed only three walks and struck out four batters before leaving with an injury. Senior Erik Fargo (Washington, Pa./Trinity) entered and immediately kept the no-hitter alive by forcing a double play. Designated hitter Eric Fritz broke up the no-hitter with one out in the sixth inning. Kevin Thomas ended the shutout bid with a one-out single in the seventh.
Fargo allowed just one run on two hits and struck out two in 2 2/3 innings. W&J scored all the runs it would need in the top of the first. Junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Hoban) reached on an error and junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) reached on an error. Both players scored when Quirin clubbed his first homer of the year over the leftfield wall.
Bogdewiecz doubled home a run in the second for a 4-0 lead, while Quirin and senior righfielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) led off the third with back-to-back homers for a 6-0 advantage. Trettel concluded the scoring in the sixth with a two-run homer to centerfield.
Trettel upped his season average to .550 after going 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and two RBI. Quirin knocked in four and was a part of four W&J double plays in the field.
UWSP built a 9-1 lead after 5 1/2 innings of the first game. The Pointers scored one run in the top of the first, but W&J tied the game on senior leftfielder Jim Pasquine's (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) RBI single which scored Bogdewiecz who tripled to lead off the frame.
The Pointers tacked on three runs in the third, one in the fourth and four more in the sixth for an eight-run lead. W&J refused to give up and plated five runs in the bottom of the sixth, but UWSP added four more in the seventh to seal the win. Pascarella cracked a two-run homer in the sixth for W&J, while Trettel added a two-run single.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - No. 21 Wisconsin-Whitewater scored six runs in the final two innings to cap off a 12-8 come-from-behind victory against Washington & Jefferson College in baseball action on Monday afternoon at Chain Of Lakes Stadium.
W&J (2-1) held a 7-6 advantage heading into the top of the eighth inning, but the Warhawks (6-1) pulled ahead, 9-7, on a Ben Kuhlmann's RBI double to right field. UWW sealed the victory with three runs on three hits in the top of the ninth.

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Senior right fielder Neil Pascarella (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold) {pictured} blasted a leadoff home run over the right centerfield wall to break an 8-8 tie and lift the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team to a 9-8 come-from-behind victory against John Carroll University on Tuesday evening at Ross Memorial Park.
Pascarella had a career day at the plate for the Presidents (2-0), going 4-for-5 with two homers, three RBI and three runs scored.
JCU led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) tied the score with a sacrifice fly which brought home junior pinch runner Zach McMonagle (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bethel Park). Senior leftfielder Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) followed with a RBI double for a 4-3 lead.
The Blue Streaks (5-4) responded and scored five runs on four hits in the top of the eighth inning to grab an 8-5 lead. Tim O'Brien opened the scoring with a RBI single to left field. Matt Lindenberger and Jason Hastings each added run-scoring hits, while Brian Benander earned a bases-loaded walk.
W&J answered and collected four runs on five hits in the bottom of the frame to send the game into the ninth inning tied 8-8. Pascarella opened with a single and came around to score on a single by senior third baseman Mike Kennedy (Hilliard, Ohio/Darby). Junior Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) and Trettel brought the Presidents to within one run (8-7) after a pair of run-scoring singles, while Pasquine tied the game with a RBI groundout.
Pascarella also accounted for the first two W&J runs of the game after cracking a solo home run to open the second inning and delivering a RBI double an inning later.
Senior left-handed pitcher Tom Dodd (Union City, Pa./Union City) earned the victory after throwing the final 1 1/3 innings. He did not allow a hit in his first outing of the year and tallied one strikeout.
Bogdewiecz and Kennedy both collected two hits, while Pasquine and Trettel finished the game with two runs batted in.

TRETTEL LEADS 12-3 TRIUMPH OVER ALLEGHENY IN SEASON OPENER (3/15)
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Junior centerfielder Andy Trettel (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) {pictured} went 4-for-5 at the plate with five RBI to help the Washington & Jefferson College baseball team to a 12-3 victory over Allegheny College on Monday afternoon at Ross Memorial Park. The Presidents (1-0) pounded out 14 total hits during the nine-run victory.
The Gators (1-3) manufactured a run and took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but W&J responded and scored twice in the bottom half. Junior shortstop Joe Bogdewiecz (Medina, Ohio/Akron Hoban) led off with a sharp single to right field and came around to score on a double to left center by Trettel. Trettel scored the second run of the inning on groundout by senior catcher Mark Thomchick (Indiana, Pa./Indiana).
Allegheny responded and plated a pair of runs in the top of the second on RBI hits from Eric Hansen and Ben Lowmaster.

The Presidents’ offensive barrage continued into the third inning as they broke the game open with four runs on three hits. Sophomore second baseman Aaron Klinec (Cleveland, Ohio/St. Ignatius) drove in the first run of the inning on a single to right field, while Bogdewiecz and Trettel again followed with back-to-back RBI base hits. Bogdewiecz scored Kaido on a single to left field, while Trettel brought Klinec and Bogdewiecz around on a double to the left center field gap.
W&J added another run in the fourth inning on Kaido's RBI single and extended the lead to 11-3 in the fifth inning after RBI singles from Trettel and senior left fielder/right-handed pitcher Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary).
Thomchick drove in Klinec for the Presidents' final run of the game with a single to right field in the seventh inning.
