PASQUINE NAMED D3BASEBALL.COM PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN (1/18)
WASHINGTON, Pa. — Washington & Jefferson College senior outfielder/right-handed pitcher Jim Pasquine (Poland, Ohio/Poland Seminary) was named to the 2010 D3baseball.com Preseason All-American team on Monday evening. He earned second-team preseason laurels as a utility player.
Pasquine, the 2009 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Player of the Year, set numerous school records last season, including hits (91), games played (49), games started (49), at-bats (189), doubles (15), runs scored (66), RBI (58), stolen bases (21) and total bases (128). He finished the season with the second-best batting average in school history (.481) and tied for second on the single-season home run list (8).
He finished the 2009 season ranked among the top 10 nationally in three statistical categories, including second in hits, sixth in batting average and ninth in total bases.
The 6-foot-3 senior also was a factor on the mound for the Presidents in 2009. Pasquine collected an overall pitching record of 5-3 with two saves in 12 appearances for the Red & Black. In 58.0 total innings, he made eight starts and took the ball during W&J’s first-ever NCAA Tournament game against Christopher Newport (Va.) on May 13, 2009, in Salisbury, Maryland.
W&J, led by seventh year Head Coach Jeff Mountain, had a record-breaking year in 2009 as the Presidents posted a 35-14 record and won its sixth PAC Baseball Championship, its fourth under Mountain (2004, 2006, 2007, 2009). The 35 victories were a school record.
Washington & Jefferson also made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament where it won two games and placed fourth at the eight-team regional hosted by Salisbury University (Md.) at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium.
The Presidents will open the 2010 season with a split doubleheader against Allegheny and John Carroll on March 13th at Ross Memorial Park in Washington. W&J then makes its annual spring trip to Florida (March 21-26) to compete in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational. The Presidents open play in Florida with a doubleheader against perennial national power Wisconsin-Stevens Point on March 21st. W&J also plays two Mideast regional contests in the Sunshine State, facing Otterbein (Ohio) on March 22nd and Hope (Mich.) on March 25th.
