Schultz, Valerie Acad. A-AVALERIE SCHULTZ BECOMES W&J’S 22ND ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN (5/27)

2009 Academic All-America Softball Teams

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College senior first baseman Valerie Schultz (Washington, Pa./McGuffey) was selected to the ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) National Academic All-America Softball Team on Thursday.  Schultz was a second-team honoree.

Schultz becomes the 22nd student-athlete in Washington & Jefferson College history to earn the prestigious honor.

W&J boasts 10 student-athletes throughout history who have won the award twice, bringing the school’s all-time Academic All-America number to 32.  David Damico, a men’s basketball standout, was the Presidents’ first CoSIDA Academic All-American in 1978.  In 2008, football player Matt Houy and men’s golfer Michael Grasso were selected.

The Academic All-America College Division Softball Team honors 35 softball players on three teams from NCAA Division I-AA, Division II, Division III or the NAIA.

Schultz graduated from Washington & Jefferson College earlier this month with degrees in mathematics and accounting.  She completed her four years with a 3.90 grade-point average.

Schultz earned Academic All-District II laurels in each of her three years of eligibility.  As a sophomore, she collected third-team honors before notching back-to-back first-team awards following her final two seasons.

In 2007, Schultz was chosen to the NFCA All-Region squad.  She is also a three-time All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference performer, including two first-team selections.  Schultz earned numerous academic awards from the college, including most recently The Clyde Shepherd Atchinson Prize and The Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants Award.

Schultz played and started 148 games for the Presidents over the past four years.  She helped the 2006 Presidents win the PAC Championship and led W&J to a pair of ECAC Division III Tournaments.

She was a career .362 hitter (161-for-445), while adding 14 home runs and 104 runs batted in.  Schultz scored 88 times and notched 38 doubles and seven triples.  She was also a standout defensively with a career .986 fielding percentage after committing only 15 errors in 1,083 chances at first base.

Schultz saved her best season for 2009 as she batted .436 (51-for-117) with nine homers and 33 RBI.  She finished 56th in NCAA Division III in home runs per game and 81st in batting average.  Schultz also recorded a .786 slugging percentage to rank 34th in the country.

Washington & Jefferson compiled an 89-65 record during her career, including a 17-23 mark this past season.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.
Since the program’s inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
