H1N1 Influenza Information
SYMPTOMS
The signs and symptoms of H1N1 influenza are similar to regular seasonal human influenza and include:
Fever over 100 degrees with cough and/or sore throat
You may also have:
*Body aches/ Headaches
*Chills
*Fatigue
*Occasionally diarrhea and vomiting
The virus is spread from person to person through coughing, sneezing, and respiratory secretions. The flu is contagious one to two days before the onset of symptoms and one day after fever resolves.
PREVENTION
Here are some ways that you can protect yourself and prevent the spread of the flu:
*Wash your hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 15-20 seconds or use alcohol-based hand sanitizers if soap and water are not available, because the virus lives for several hours on surfaces
*Do not share drinking or eating utensils
*Avoid close personal contact with people who exhibit flu-like symptoms
*Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth
*Cover your mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing with your elbow or with a tissue and discard the tissue in the trash
*Get plenty of sleep, drink plenty of fluids, eat nutritious foods and manage stress
If you notice symptoms, do not go to class or work, stay in your room, avoid contact with people as much as possible for at least 24 hours after fever subsides, and call Health Services at 724-223-6047 and/or your medical provider for advice. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is currently advising that most cases of H1N1 influenza recover completely in seven days. Students with chronic medical problems should be more vigilant of their symptoms and seek early medical advice if they are in contact with someone with the flu.
