Fact Sheet:
Host City:
Valparaíso

The second-largest city in Chile, with a population of 300,000, Valparaíso enjoys a spectacular location in central Chile between the mountains and the sea. This coastal city boasts a romantic, time-worn elegance of cobbled streets, Victorian houses, and funiculars that transport pedestrians up the hilly slopes. The movement of the Chilean Congress to Valparaíso from Santiago has provided a momentum to the city. Valparaíso is Chile's most important seaport and an increasingly vital cultural center. Built upon dozens of steep hillsides overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Valparaíso boasts a labyrinth of streets and cobblestone alleyways, embodying a rich architectural and cultural legacy.
Viña del Mar

Just ten minutes north of Valparaíso lies Viña del Mar, Chile's premier coastal resort. You'll find fabulous beaches and a bustling commercial sector. Viña del Mar is known as the Ciudad Jardín (Garden City) thanks to its lavish gardens and subtropical atmosphere. The nightlife is better in Viña del Mar than in Valparaíso, so plan to head there for cinemas and dance clubs.
Near these twin cities are beaches and stunning coastline. Be sure to experience the fabulous seafood. The Reserva Nacional Lago Peñuelas near Valparaíso is a popular spot for weekend outings, and the Parque Nacional la Campana is a great place for communing with the outdoors.
Just south of Valparaísois Santiago, the capital of Chile. Santiago is one of the few capitals in the world with easy access to both ski slopes (about thirty miles away) and beaches (about 60 miles away). A bustling atmosphere and a vital business district can be found among the skyscrapers of modern Santiago. High culture is readily available in Santiago, from museums to galleries to the incredible mix of colonial and modern architecture.
