A “Homegrown” theme showcasing the best of Western Pennsylvania composers and musicians with roots and connections to Washington and western Pennsylvania will be the focus of the Washington Symphony Orchestra’s final concert of the 2008-09 season on Saturday, May 2 at 8 p.m. at Trinity High School. The seventh season finale of the community orchestra will give WSO patrons an opportunity to hear the debut of “Journey into Wissameking” written by W&J Assistant Professor of Music Kyle Simpson especially for the WSO. “Wissameking” is of French origin meaning catfish place.
In addition, the music of composers Stephen Foster and Henry Mancini will add to the familiar aspect of the concert. Bill Purse’s “Kennywood’s Open” multimedia presentation will bring back memories to young and old alike of the amusement park that is synonymous with summer in western Pennsylvania. The concert begins at 8 p.m., with the Conductor’s Corner at 7:15 p.m., featuring more information about the music that will be performed during the concert. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors (65 and up) and children. Advance tickets are available at any Washington Federal Savings Bank location, Citizens Library, online at www.washsym.org or by calling 724-223-9796.
