W&J: Chemistry

Chemistry is the branch of science that deals with the composition of matter and the changes that matter undergoes. Sometimes called "the central science," chemistry is a branch of knowledge that is closely related to physics, biology, geology, medicine, and materials science. A major in chemistry provides students with the opportunity to learn about natural phenomena, devise experiments, synthesize substances, and develop analytical skills. It prepares students for a number of career paths. A minor in chemistry provides a solid background in basic chemical principles while allowing flexibility for a student to focus on the particular area of chemistry that he or she finds most interesting. A chemistry minor requires the equivalent of six courses in chemistry and may include research if a student so chooses.
