Cross Country/Track & Field Trio Named Capital One Academic All-District
WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson College senior C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton), junior Scott Ryan (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) and sophomore Laura Lee (Spartansburg, Pa./Spartansburg) were all selected to the Capital One Track & Field/Cross Country Academic All-District IV Teams (Men / Women) on Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). All three student-athletes advance to the national academic All-America ballot.
Corcoran made her second-straight appearance in the NCAA Division III javelin national championship on Saturday and placed 19th with a top throw of 38.28 meters. She earned 16th place at the 2011 NCAA Championship after qualifying for the event with a school-record throw of 41.54 meters.
The 2011 Presidents’ Athletic Conference Field MVP was also a member of the school-record, 400-meter outdoor relay last season with a time of 48.68 seconds. Corcoran, who was selected as the PAC Athlete of the Week on April 11, also lettered four years for the W&J swimming & diving program during the winter. Corcoran graduated with a 3.33 grade-point average with a degree in Spanish.
Ryan, a business administration major with a 3.41 GPA, became the first W&J male cross country runner to earn an invitation to the NCAA Division III Championships this fall. The 2011 PAC cross country completed the 279-runner, 8K course in 175th place with a time of school-record time of 25:45.20. The PAC runner-up was the champion of the Waynesburg and Pitt-Greensburg invitationals.
During the track & field season, Ryan captured conference titles in the 5,000 (15:21.62) and 10,000 (31:46.81) meter events en route to collecting the overall PAC Track & Field MVP award. He was also second in the 1,500 meters (4:01.44). He owns eight school records (2 cross country, 2 indoor track & field, 4 outdoor track & field).
Lee was a member of the Presidents’ 4x100 meter relay team which took second place (49.70) at the conference championships. That relay earned an invitation to the ECAC Division III Championships.
A member of the school-record 800-meter (1:47.77) and 1,600-meter (4:13.77) indoor relay teams, Lee helped W&J win its second-ever PAC team track & field title in 2011 after running a leg on the first place 400-meter relay. Lee owns a 3.86 GPA as a mathematics major. She is also working towards a minor in education.
Washington & Jefferson College has produced 39 CoSIDA Academic All-District selections since 2010, including 13 this academic year.
