The Dao of Dieter: Inside the German Mind

Course Instructor: Michael Shaughnessy

What makes the Germans tick? Why do we think they are efficient, always on time, never smile, eat sausage for every meal, live for soccer, and drink beer for breakfast? This seminar focuses on 'path' towards 'Germaness' and a deep, philosophical (yet practical) understanding of the German people. Students will engage a variety of 'texts' including historical readings, philosophical manifestos, films, images, sounds, and culinary delights. Students will read, speak, and write essays all aimed at answering the unanswerable question "What is German - Was ist Deutsch?"
