Books on Careers

Career Paths in Psychology

This is an APA publication. It contains 14 Chapters written by people from different areas of specialization in psychology describing their careers. They describe how they got into this area, what they like and dislike about their job, what a typical work week looks like, what the job opportunities and salaries look like, etc. It seems like a useful resource for students interested in grad school but trying to pick a field. It has some fairly standard chapters about psychology in academia and different types of clinical settings, but it also has chapters on health psychology, human factors psychology, and military psychology which are less common (or less visible) possibilities.

Taking Charge of Your Career Direction (3rd edition)

Job Search (3rd edition)

Student Activities - Career Planning Guide (3rd edition)

This trio of books came highly recommended for helping students to sort out their career goals. The first book has a collection of activities to get students thinking about what they like to do, and what their skills are, as a way to help them think about career options. The second book provides advice and exercises to help with a job search, so it talks about cover letters, resumes, job interviews, etc. The third book has convenient copies of all of the work sheets from the first two books to make photocopying easier if you want to try the exercises.
