Discovering Your Sense of Place

As we zip down the road, checking for messages, surrounded by technology, how often do we really look around and see the landscape, or read the landscape?  Why does this region have steep hills and thick soils?  Where are “Penn’s Woods”?  What humans and other animals lived here prior to and since the recent invasion by Europeans?  What natural riches have fueled our economy?  In this section, we will explore the underlying physical and biological processes, including human history, that have shaped this landscape.  We will learn more about ourselves and the landscape through being alone and together, reflecting, writing, talking, and exploring the landscape through hikes, tours, and camping (one weekend).  In the end, this landscape, at least for your next four years, will be more recognizable and comfortable, and you will better “know who you are.”
