Environmental Studies Major and Minor

MAJOR REQUIREMENTS: A total of 10 courses, including the following five core courses that must be successfully completed:

  • EVS 101 Introduction to Environmental Studies (EVS 100 Topics in Environmental Studies may be taken in lieu of EVS 101 for students declared as EVS majors)
  • EVS 201 Environmental Issues in the Developed/Developing World
  • PHL 231 Environmental Ethics , or HIS 274 World Environmental History , POL 313 Environmental Policy , or EVS 315 International Environmental Policy
  • BIO 320 Ecology or BIO 288 Conservation Biology
  • EVS 430 Capstone Experience in Environmental Studies

In addition, students must successfully complete five elective courses as follows:

  • One course from the Natural Sciences: EVS 150 (taught from physics), EVS 250 (Intersession only), EVS 330, EVS 350, BIO 200, BIO 245, BIO 288, BIO 416, CHM 101, CHM 340, or PSY 321.
  • One course from the Social Sciences: EVS 130 (Intersession only), EVS 260, EVS 280 (Intersession only), EVS 300, CIS 246, ANT 175, SOC 261, SOC 262, SOC 347, SOC 361 or ECN 391.
  • The remaining three elective courses may be chosen from the lists above or from the following Humanities/Arts courses: ENG 222 (Topics: Literature and the Environment), HIS 274 (World Environmental History), or MUS 245.

MINOR REQUIREMENTS: A total of six courses, including the following three core courses that must be successfully completed:

  •  EVS 101 Introduction to Environmental Studies
  •  EVS 201 Environmental Issues in the Developed and Developing World
  •  EVS 315 International Environmental Policy

In addition, students must successfully complete three electives as follows:

  • One course from the Natural Sciences: EVS 150 (taught from Physics), EVS 250 (Intersession only), EVS 330, EVS 350, BIO 200, BIO 245, BIO 288, BIO 416, CHM 101, CHM 340, or PSY 321.
  • One course from the Social Sciences: EVS 130 (Intersession only), EVS 260, EVS 280 (Intersession only), EVS 300, CIS 246, ANT 175,  SOC 261, SOC 262, SOC 347, SOC 361, POL 313 or ECN 391.
