EVS201

Environmental Issues in the Developed & Developing World

Success in sustainable development can be realized if the latent skills and creativity of local people are appreciated and harnessed.
This course makes in-depth examinations of environmental issues from social, political, economic and ecological perspectives. Case studies of local, regional, national, and international issues are analyzed. Topics include causes and effects of land degradation, links between poverty and environmental degradation, urbanization, globalization, loss of biodiversity, and adoption/enforcement of international environmental protocols. Students perform research comparing a common issue/problem in a developed and developing country. The class is normally taught with an "oral communications" focus, allowing students to research and debate current events.

This EVS core course is offered every spring and fulfills the following college requirements:
  • Cultural Diversity
  • Oral Communications
