Tue, October 9 - 10:00 AM
Location:
Olin theatre
The content of the masterclass is determined in conjunction with the presenter. Information and
advice dealing with all aspects of marionette development can be provided. Typically, the time will be
spent discovering and understanding what goes into creating a good marionette. A variety of working
marionettes (ranging from very simple but functioning marionettes that a beginner could build with
common materials, to some very sophisticated theatrical marionettes) will be presented. Hands-on
manipulation of marionettes for participants is encouraged. Though the direction of the workshop will
be determined by the interests of the participants, it is likely that the following topics will come up: the
design of marionette controls, the proper stringing of a marionette, puppet anatomy, balance and the
distribution of weight and the construction of the joints. Working drawings, tools and raw materials will
present. Parts of marionettes made from different materials will be passed around. There will be
questions and answers throughout. Participants are invited to bring along anything they're working on
and the class will troubleshoot as time allows.
