This past August, the media was abuzz with the news that J.K. Rowling was the author of a new novel, The Cuckoo's Calling, secretly released under the pen name Robert Galbraith. Key to unearthing this discovery was a mathematical analysis performed by Patrick Juola. For years Dr. Juola has investigated how forensic stylometry, an approach for finding patterns in writing, can identify authorship. In this talk, he will discuss how, after being approached by London’s Sunday Times, he investigated the question of whether Galbraith was actually Rowling. He will also discuss how forensic stylometry is being used in other authorship identification problems, such as authenticating early newspaper articles by Abraham Lincoln, and can be used to detect plagiarism.
The talk will be targeted to a general audience, but will include some technical details concerning his methods.
