Data Mining & Astrophysics Workshop

Monday, November 4, 2013 - 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
Location:
Tech Center 222

Greg Hallenbeck, an astrophysics researcher at Cornell University, will deliver an interactive, hands-on workshop on the role of data mining in the field of astronomy.  Using  the ALFALFA survey (http://egg.astro.cornell.edu/alfalfa/) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (http://www.sdss.org/), Greg will provide real-world examples of how astronomers use SQL programming and data mining to explore and analyze the vast amount of data produced by astronomical instruments.  The presentation is appropriate for any student interested in the application of new technologies to scientific research.

Participants will be working individually or in pairs at computers during this workshop; observers are welcome also. Pizza will be provided.
