What is liberty? Is it important? What should we do to promote freedom in the world? We will look at the concepts of freedom from different angles. We will determine how the various aspects of freedom - personal, economic, political and psychological - are complementary, and determine what sorts of institutions promote or undermine these aspects.
We will also look at the role of mass media in shaping democracy around the world. In the words of James Madison, “A popular government without popular information or the means of acquiring it is but a prologue to a farce or a tragedy, or perhaps both.” This course will take a careful look at the role of the press and mass media in the shaping of elections, public opinion, and economic policies.
