 Language Placement Exam Instructions

LANGUAGE PLACEMENT MUST BE TAKEN IN BURNETT CENTER ROOM 207

Step 1 –  Log into the system using the following:

Username: capetest

Password: capetest

Step 2 – If you have a background in French, Spanish, or German, you must take the CAPE test and language profile questionnaire. If you have a background in another language, skip to step 6.

If you are taking the placement exam for Spanish, German, or French, please double-click on the desktop icon shown to the left for the exam that you will be taking. Or choose the exam from your start menu, the WEBCAPE

This will start the CAPE test exam for the language that you will be testing in.

Step 3 – Before your placement exam begins, you will be asked several questions about yourself.  Please answer them to the best of your ability.  If you do not know the answer to one of the questions about yourself, please leave it blank.

Step 4 – Once you have finished the questions about yourself, you will be shown an example question so that you know how to answer the questions.  You can choose an answer by either clicking the correct answer or by typing the letter of your selection on the keyboard.  *** Remember to answer the questions to the best of your ability!

Step 5 – Once you have finished answering all questions on the placement exam, you will be given a score for your placement exam.  Please write this number down above.  This number will determine what language level you have been placed into.

Please write down placement exam score: __________________

Step 6 – You are now ready to take the Language Profile Questionnaire.  All students at W&J must take this before registering for language classes. Launch a web browser and load

http:/www.washjeff.edu/lngprofile/

Step 7 – Once the webpage shown below has been loaded, you will be asked to enter your student id number.  This number can be found on the sheet given to you that contain your username and password.  Once you have entered your id number, please choose continue.

Step 8 – You will now be asked if you have a CAPE test score to enter on the page shown below.  If you took the language placement exam for Spanish, German, or French, please choose Yes and go to Step 9a.

If you have a background in any other language, choose No and go to Step 9b.

Step 9a – After choosing Yes, you will be taken to a page shown below that will ask you for Status this Semester, Language of Instruction and CAPE test score.  Choose the language of the CAPE test that you took as well as the score that you received on the placement test.  Also, remember to choose your status, i.e. freshman.  Now go to Step 10.

Step 9b – After choosing No, you will be taken to a page that will ask you for Status this Semester, Language of Instruction, and Course Number.  Choose either Russian or Japanese for the language that you will be signing up for as well as the course number.  The intro level for these courses is 105.  Also, remember to choose your status, i.e. freshman.  Now go to Step 10.

Step 10 – The remaining questions on the questionnaire will ask you about your language skills and experiences.  Please answer all of the questions as well as the writing sample to the best of your ability.  Please write the writing sample in the target language.

For some students, the system will prompt you to see a language professor.  In order to finalize placement, you must see a language professor and will not be able to register for classes until you do this.

For most students, when you finish the writing sample, you will be given the language course that you have placed into.  Please note that you cannot register for a lower course. If you have any questions, see the coordinator for your language or the chair of modern languages.
