Placement in German Classes at W&J

All students at W&J must complete either two terms of a foreign language at the first year level or one term at the second year level.  Students who place above the 208 level may  be exempted in consultation with the language program director.

There are three ways to fulfill the language requirement:

  • Students whose ability indicates placement in 105 will take 105 and 106.

  • Students who place in 106 will take 106 and 207.

  • Students who place in 207 need take 207 only.

Students are encouraged to fulfill this requirement during the first two years at the College.

Here are some general rules of thumb regarding entrance ability for particular courses.

In order to place you into the best possible German class, all new German language students are required to take the Computerized Adaptive Placement Exam (CAPE Test)  AND  the new language student profile questionnaire.

They are usually administered during summer Freshman Orientation; anyone who does not take the exam during orientation can arrange with Dr. Shaughnessy to take it during the semester.

If you have a background in German and would like to enroll in a German class but have not yet taken the placement exam, contact Dr. Shaughnessy to schedule a test time.

A student who falls at the high or low end of a scoring range may be placed higher or lower than the course indicated, depending on the number of years of German that student has had. Placement in these situations is done in consultation with Dr. Shaughnessy. If you feel that your placement is incorrect, please call Dr. Shaughnessy immediately X6170 or email german@washjeff.edu.
