No education is truly complete unless one spends some time living and studying in a foreign environment, and this is especially true for students of language. A number of W&J students have recently spent a summer, a semester, or an entire academic year in Germany. Locations include Cologne, Constance, Madgeburg, Munich, Bonn, and Freiburg.

We have a relationship with the University of Cologne that allows for direct enrollment of two W&J students per year. If you are interested in studying at the Uni-Köln, see Dr. Shaughnessy.

We strongly urge students with a concentration in German to spend an extended amount of time somewhere in the German-speaking world!

For a brief introduction to life in Germany, you could participate in an Intersession Abroad program. For a lengthier stay, you could consider studying at one of the highly respected Goethe Institutes or spending a term on any accredited study abroad program sponsored by a college, university, or organization such as the Institute for the International Education of Students.

Besides developing your German language skills, most programs sponsored by US institutions offer a variety of courses that will fulfill core distribution requirements. Programs often cost much less than one might initially think—it is possible to find a program that is comparable to or sometimes even less expensive than the cost of a semester at W&J.

Study Abroad for Non-Majors

A number of opportunities for study in Germany exist for students with majors and minors in areas other than German. For an intensive introduction to the language by some of the best immersion-style instructors in the world, check out one of the Goethe Institute programs  or course offered through the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). With only one year of college German at W&J, you can qualify for the PCIC W&J in Cologne Semester!
