Minute, floating perennial herb; plant bodies solitary or few-clustered, orbicular to elliptic-obovate, 1/16"-3/16" long. Roots to 15cm, tip mostly rounded; sheath not winged. Stipes white, small, often decaying. Fronds floating, flat, 1-8mm. Margins are entire,veins 3-5,coloring beginning from the attachment point of root.
Flowers: ovaries 1-ovulate, utricular scale with narrow opening at apex. Fruits 0.8-1mm, laterally winged toward apex. Seeds staying within fruit wall after ripening. Flowering occurs from late fall-early spring.
Normally reproduces by budding (asexually) but it is very capable of sexual reproduction.
