Humanities General Education
Departments wishing to offer a course for Humanities "breadth of
study' should apply to the director of the Humanities Division-at present,
Carolyn Kyler.
In a Humanities breadth of study course, students should:
- Learn about the Humanities (see our mission);
- Learn the subject matter and methods of a specific discipline or disciplines
within the Humanities;
- Gain practice in critical thinking, reading, writing, and speaking.
The application should include:
- A course description that includes the topics covered, course objectives
or student learning outcomes, and methodology. (Any of the following may
serve this purpose: the new course proposal form; a syllabus that includes
all the relevant information; or a description written for this occasion.)
- A brief explanation of why the course would be an appropriate breadth
of study course in the Humanities. See the criteria above.
Electronic submission is preferred. All applications should also be approved
by the relevant department chair or program director. The division director
will accept applications from the chair/director or from individual faculty
members. In the latter case, the application must be copied to the department
chair or program director.
