The Magellan Project provides W&J-based support for W&J students who wish to pursue interesting projects during their college careers. The Magellan Project is designed to assist W&J students in crafting and in telling compelling stories of curiosity and achievement that will be useful throughout their college years and their subsequent transition to life after W&J (graduate school or career).

Examples of past Magellan Projects:

  • studying Holocaust sites in Europe
  • marketing perfumes in Switzerland
  • researching at the Pasteur Institute in Paris
  • assessing worker safety in Pittsburgh
  • exploring health care systems in Cyprus
  • managing operations at the Cal Ripken Baseball Experience in South Carolina
Forms of W&J-based Support:
  • Summer funding through the Geary (Freshmen), Walker (Sophomores), Kelso (Juniors), and Franklin (Internship) Awards
  • Coordinated mentoring with the Magellan Project Coordinators
  • Proposal design workshops to assist in writing compelling project proposals and personal statements
  • One-stop referral location for others sources of funding/support (through departments, external entities, national fellowships, etc.)
Summer Funding Competition:
  • The Magellan Award competition takes place in the early spring. The deadline for proposals will be February 10, 2012.
  • We will be offering a Writing Workshop on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. in the Media Room. This will be an opportunity to learn more about the Magellan awards and to learn about proposal writing.
