Application Process

  • The 2013 Magellan Project application is now available: 2013 Magellan Application.

  • The application deadline is February 15, 2013. All applications must be received by 5:00 p.m. that day. Submit your application as an attachment to Magellan@washjeff.edu.

Please Note:

  1. If you are granted a Magellan award, you will be responsible for making your own travel, lodging, and eating arrangements.
  2. All travel experiences must go through the Office of Global Education (for contact information, insurance, liability, etc.).
  3. All Magellan award recipients who are undertaking international travel must have travel insurance. Travel insurance is available through the Office of Global Education.
  4. We discourage using third-party (or outside) providers except in extraordinary circumstances. But if a third-party provider is used, that group may have specific expectations and may impose separate requirements beyond those of Washington & Jefferson College. They also may have their own processes for addressing issues related to your experience. You should work within the expectations of the third-party provider. You should recognize that Washington & Jefferson College is not responsible for any elements provided by a third-party provider.
  5. Travel and research experiences might involve risks or other uncertainties. Washington & Jefferson College is not responsible or liable for those risks or uncertainties.
  6. In the case that your project involves an internship or third-party experience, the Magellan award is contingent on being accepted for the internship or third-party experience. (If your project is accepted but the internship is not granted, it may be possible to receive funding for a back-up project. You should feel free to identify a back-up plan in your Project Description.)
  7. Magellan awards are typically in the range of $1000-$3000 and fund part of the experience being proposed. There is an expectation of an individual financial contribution. The individual financial contribution should be clarified in the proposed budget.
  8. Magellan Project applicants must have at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA.
  9. Magellan Project experiences should be 3-12 weeks in duration.
  10. Magellan awards are distributed in two installments--one (75%) at the beginning of the project, and the other (25%) upon return and submission of a reflective report and financial summary report (along with receipts). The reflective report is due by September 1.
  11. Magellan recipients are expected to participate in publicity related to the Magellan Project. This publicity may include (but is not limited to) recognition at College events, inclusion on the College website, and helping to promote the Magellan Project to W&J students.
