Students and Faculty Give Presentations at National Joint Mathematics Meeting in San Diego
Dr. Faun Doherty, Dr. Michael Woltermann, and Dr. Roman Wong were accompanied by eight students, Jake Fluke (’14), Ron Graf (’14), Jared Jones (‘13), Laura Lee (’14), Catherine Monahan (’13), Emily Sasala (’13), Hope Snyder (’14), and Samantha Taylor (’14) to the 2013 National Joint Mathematics Meeting in San Diego on January 9-12.
Dr. Doherty gave a talk on “The ups and downs of interdisciplinary collaboration: undergraduate research experiences in math and biology” and Dr. Woltermann gave a talk on “Frégier Families of Conics” at the conference.
Hope Snyder presented a talk on “Conics in Extended Taxicab Geometry” and Emily presented a talk on “Independent Sets in Chain Paths and Cycles” at two MAA sessions. Their talks were part of the research they did with Dr. Wong that was supported by the W&J Dean’s Innovation and Development Fund during the summer of 2012. Catherine and Samantha presented a poster “Graph Theoretical Comparison of the Coprinus cinera Wild Type and Mutant Networks” at the Undergraduate Poster Session. Their work was the result of their summer research with Dr. Doherty, together with a team from the Biology department that included Dr. Burns and two biology students. Their summer research was supported by the HHMI Grant through the college. Their poster competed with 320 posters from colleges and universities around the country and was awarded one of the top 20 poster prizes. All the four students who presented received Undergraduate Travel grants from the MAA.
During the conference, the students participated in many activities that included attending invited lectures from prominent mathematicians, book exhibits, graduate schools fair, and sessions hosted by the National Security Agency and the Actuarial Society. The students also spent half a day visiting the San Diego Zoo.
