Modern Languages

The W&J Modern Languages Department is located in the Burnett Center.

About

The Department of Modern Languages immerses students in the languages, practices and perspectives of cultures around the world. Students gain the skills and knowledge necessary to communicate and interact appropriately in foreign countries.

Linguistic and socio-linguistic skills are integrated with critical reading at all levels of language instruction. Students who complete this course of study are better able to participate actively and meaningfully in an increasingly interconnected world.

The Department of Modern Languages includes seven language programs: French, German, Spanish, ArabicChinese, and Russian.

To aid students, the Language Resource Center, located in the Burnett Center, includes swipe-card access for students and faculty seven days a week from 6am to midnight, live satellite television with more than 60 channels in seven languages, a Skype Bar with unlimited land-line calling to 36 countries, a media viewing station for DVD and VHS films, an online movie library with access to thousands of foreign films, free language tutoring in the evenings, and 20 computer workstations.

This is an interdisciplinary department, connecting with the departments of Education, and Economics and Business, as well as numerous associated majors and minors, through its diverse language programs and areas of study. Additional course information is available in the W&J College Catalog.
